Hi Guys,
The more I learn about pig farming, the more passionately I believe that this is the time to get serious about the pork we eat in this country. We’ve got a truly incredible product in our British pork and a wonderful industry producing it. It's up to us to make sure we don't lose it.,
Britain has some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world where pig farming is concerned. But lower standards of animal welfare in some European countries mean those countries can pump out cheaper meat, which is why pork from the EU is undercutting ours. If we aren’t careful, our British farmers will be driven out of the market completely and British pork will be something we tell our grandkids about.
So I'm asking you to do THREE things:
1. Buy British pork.
Look for these logos when you’re out buying your packs of meat. If British pork is not available where you shop, ask why not!
2. Try cheaper cuts of meat like belly, shoulder and neck fillet steak.
If you’ve never cooked these cuts before don’t worry, because I've written some delicious recipes to get you started. Take my Pig Pledge and you can get access to all the recipes from the show!
3. Demand clear labelling
At the moment it is not a legal requirement to state where your pork is from in the EU. As minimum welfare standards in the UK are higher than in Europe I think this should be changed so that you can see clearly where your pork was farmed.
Most importantly, once you’ve done those three things I want you to enjoy eating British pork. Not only is it incredibly delicious, but you’ll be helping out our British farmers and possibly saving a sow from a life in one of those horrible sow stalls.
Show your support and take the Pig Pledge! (link to pledge page)
