Growing vegetables and herbs in unused spaces

Wed 16 Jul 2008
GENERAL BLOG

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I was out and about in Shoreditch and I came across this space under a billboard that had been transformed into a garden. In the garden where herbs and vegetables growing and on the front gate to the garden was a sign saying the "Plant Room" and a number to call for more information.

I just spoke to a lady called Ulrike from a company called "What If" who are an "innovation company". I know that in the past Fifteen has worked with "What If" and I was really pleased and excited to chat with Ulrike about the "Plant Room". They are working with local residents of Shoreditch and the Shoreditch Trust to transform unused areas into gardens to plant vegetables and herbs. It's a fantastic and commendable initiative and I thought that it would be of great interest to our forum members, particlualry in light of the "Making Meals Last" forum that we have created.

I wondered if anyone else knows of or are engaged in any similar projects? Let us know if you are. Here is the link to What If's website for additional information on the Plant Room - http://www.whatifinnovation.com/default

I am interested in finding out more about this project and I will post up additional information for you in the future.

Regards

Danny

Howdy everyone,

Thanks to all of you who have been posting up your recipes. I was trolling through all of the blogs this afternoon and there are some great images of members recipes but not the actual recipe itself. Just want to encourage you all to post the recipe up as well if you can as when I looked at some of the pics I was keen to know how to cook it as well.

Thanks and regards

Danny

summer party and podcasts

Mon 07 Jul 2008
GENERAL BLOG

Hi All,

Jamie's summer party was a great success. I filmed Jamie preparing for the party and I also managed to share with him some of your brilliant suggestions for summer food. Needless to say the food was delicious and there were only a few showers. Towards the end of the day we all looked up into the sky to view the most magnificent double rainbow. Perfect ending to a perfect day!

We are busy editing the Podcasts now so please keep checking back for the first one that we will post up on the site later this week. Some of the content that we will have for you includes Jamie's Tandori spiced lamb, pizza's, a chat with Andrew from the company that built Jamie's wood fired oven and Jamie taking me on a guided tour of his garden chatting about vegetables and what is growing in the garden at the moment.

Italian Festival with Gennaro

Sun 29 Jun 2008
GENERAL BLOG

Hi everyone,

Today I was invited to film Gennaro Contaldo as he was the official guest of honour at an Italian Festival here in London. The festival was called La Scampagnata and all of the funds raised were in aid of Villa Scalabrini which is a retirement home for elderly Italians in Shenley. The Scalabrini Fathers is an Italian charity that looks after elderly Italians in cities all over the world.

No Italian Festival is complete of course without food and today I was invited to lunch at the festival by the Carnevalle family who sponsored the event. The Carnevalle family supply goods to Jamie's Italian. The lunch was outstanding and consisted of grilled chicken skewers that had been marinated in chilli, rosemary and garlic, polenta in a tomato sauce and delicious Italian sausages. All washed down with Prosecco and finished off with the best Cannoli I have ever eaten. Oh, and how could i forget pizza from the wood fired oven.

I truly do have the best job in the world and on days like today I really do believe that. The day was full of dancing, children running aorund freely and good friends celebrating food, family and a good old fashioned sense of community. I had to laugh when I was at lunch as I turned to the Italian chap who I was sitting next to and said "Who would you like to see win the Eurpean Football Cup tonight" my new found friend looked at me as if I had just insulted his grandmother as his response was "no one as Itlay is not playing..." I love Italians, they are so proud of their country and culture and they really do know how to have fun.

I will be posting up the video of Gennaro in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime here is a picture of the dinner that I have just cooked. I was given so much food today, beautiful cuts of meat and bread. Tonight I cooked a spaghetti that consisted of salami, chilli, garlic and Italian Parsley from my garden.

All the best

Danny
