about me
I am a sixty-something retired nurse-midwife who loves to cook and garden. Flowers, veg, herbs, etc. I have two grown daughters and four grandsons. I have lived all over the eastern part of the US (husband is an industrial engineer) and finally settled here about 9 years ago when my spouse opened his consulting firm and we could live where we like as long as it's near an airport. I really admire Jamie...we have been watching him since Naked Chef days. Love the new show and his home in the country.

This is not from this year...I already had one in the computer so didn't bother taking another.  they are quite beautiful, but only last about 3 days, and they smell very sweet, something like vanilla, and the bees love them.

Heirloom tomatoes

GENERAL BLOG

This is the beginning of my tomato crop this season.  The two big ones on the left are German Queen, the dark ones in the center are Brandywine, the yellow one is Yellow Taxi,  there are two Roma's in the upper right (hard to see) and the other two red ones are not heirloom, but are bred to withstand the diseases we have to contend with in the South.  They were only identified by numbers in Johnny's Selected Seeds, and so far are not too susceptible to fungus.  We had bacon and tomato sandwiches for breakfast this morning...the first of many, I'm sure.

Cherry Cobbler

GENERAL BLOG

On Thursday my daughter and three grandsons went blueberry picking at Larriland Farm which is West of Columbia, MD.  They all had a great time and the farm is beautiful...check out www.pickyourown.com to see it.  In addition to the blueberries they picked cherries and yellow squash, but that doesn't even begin to say what they have there.  They even have flower fields where you can pick your own.  If any of you are within driving distance it is definitely worth it.

I grow other things besides veg...this is one of the few shady spots where I can grow hydrangeas.  The stone pot with the Coleus in it (by the big rock) is a crucible for smelting bronze from Montana which my friend gave me.  There's another one out of the picture to the right on the other side of the path

My first artichoke

GENERAL BLOG

I'm trying this again...the first time the file was too big and I had to re-size the picture.  This is my first go at growing artichokes.  I only got the idea while reading the catalog from Johnny's Selected Seeds last winter.  The first packet of seeds I started indoors,  but they didn't do well.  Determined to succeed, I ordered another packet.  In the meantime i found some plants at a local garden center and bought 5.  When the other seeds arrived I direct seeded them into the raised bed and they ALL came up and are doing well.  So now I have about 27 artichoke plants.  I tried transplanting some with no luck.  I think it was too hot, also they have a tremendous tap root and I didn't get it all.  I will wait 'til they go dormant in the Fall and try again.  I have lots of friends standing in line to get artichoke plants!
