School Dinners - Spanish schools are an inspiration!

A little insight into how its done in other countries! Spain is well known for its HEALTHY mediteranean diet, this goes for everyone - in particular the little ones. What a great example of healthy eating & showing the kids how to eat healthily from an early age.

After the great work we have all seen Jamie do on highlighting the need for an improvement of school dinners in the UK. I Just wanted to share with you all my experience of school dinners in Spain. I am currently living on the southern coast of Spain, last month my 3 and a half year old son started in the local state Spanish infant school. I was amazed at the food they are served each & every day. All food is cooked freshly on the premises, using local products & provides the kids with a fantastic, delicious, healthy menu!! I have attached this monthīs menu for you all to see. Iīm sure the British government could reach this high standard. The food is subsidised by the government for those families on low incomes. Monthly payments for the dinners are calculated on the earnings of the family. Families can be expected to pay up to 79€ per month, depending on their circumstances, this I think is a small price to pay for our little ones to be fed such fresh & healthy food & to teach them from an early age the inportance of healthy eating.
The attached menu is all in Spanish, but you will be able to see that they are served 3 courses, a starter, a main & dessert. Generally the starters tend to be soup, a stew, lentils, rice dishes, pasta or a type of salad. Mains tend to be fish / meat with fresh vegetables or salad. Dessert is usually fresh fruit, yoghurt & milk shakes.
What a fantastic example to our kids - donīt you think!!
