I made chips out of sweet potatoes. How did it taste?
I made chips out of sweet potatoes. How did it taste?
Just like normal chips.
What an anti climax, you know they cost about a hundred times more than normal potatoes.

Re: I made chips out of sweet potatoes. How did it taste?
abdullahcohn, how did you cook the chips?... I make chips/fries with sweet potato in the oven and they taste realy good.
I often make normal potato chips/fries at the same time and you realy can taste the difference in them.
If I am doing a mix of sweet potatoe and normal potatoe chips/fries I start cooking the normal potato a little time before cooking the swet potato ones.
Either way the process is the same.. (I leave the veg skins on)...I just chop the potatoes into chunky chip sizes , I put them in a bowl with a little salt pepper and oilve oil and I toss them about so that all the chips have a slight coating of oil.
I them bake them in the oven., till they are cooked.
some people par boil these sort of oven chips before they coat them in oil, but, I do not as I find that when I tried a version that I had parboiled before tossing in oil..the chips absorbed more oil than I wanted them to....so.. I never par-boil the chips.
These are always popular with the family. I male potato wedges the same way.

Re: I made chips out of sweet potatoes. How did it taste?
I deep fried them in corn oil like I do with Potato chips.
The only difference I could spot was they had a slight chestnut taste and smell to them.
So I would say they were slightly better than Potato chips, but just slightly. Not a hundred times better as the price would indicate.
Anyway, I’ll cook some tomorrow using your recipe along with some potato ones so I can compare them.

They were OK, I still think they taste similar though.

The only tip I can contribute is the fact I like white potato chips with mayo, and sweet potato chips with ketchup...

Kay,sweet taters are definitely better for you...they've got a good supply of beta carotene...
They don't really taste the same as potatoes...not to me anyway. We get bright orange ones here, the best variety...on a BBQ,they are well wicked.
Literally melt in your mouth...and not at all stodgy and cloying, like how regular taters can get...

Re: I made chips out of sweet potatoes. How did it taste?
I tend to buy the bright orange sweet potato as well, but sometimes I have bought the variety with the creamier coloured flesh but they are not so sweet.
I have not thought of putting sweet potatos on the BBQ, I will give that a go in a month or two when the weather here improves.
Yesterday was a mix of spring like sunshine, rain and heavy hail !
We bake a lot of sweet potato, and also if we are having a 'Sunday Roast' then we add some sweet potato into the roasting pan with the normal potatos.
I agree with you Stefanie, I think that sweet potato tastes quite different.
