Recent interview I did for my friends on Myspace

Hi Guys,

So, now the series has ended, and I feel really proud of it. I know that some people in Rotherham felt the first programme depicted them in a bad light but it was never intended to be Rotherham-specific or class-specific.  My group were from all sorts of backgrounds.  Definitely Natasha and Claire needed the most help at the beginning but all the class were eating the same kind of food when I met them.  Hopefully when we got into programmes 2, 3 and 4, the people of Rotherham realised that it was a beautiful snapshot of both Rotherham and of Great Britain today.  It has shown that with just a little bit of help and access to good information, you can make a massive difference to someone's life.

What annoyed me about some of the criticism I received was the claim that I'd chosen clichéd characters.  I can swear to you that that was not the case.  Ask anyone who works in the National Health Service and they'll tell you that they see ten times worse on a regular basis.  I think that sometimes people don't like to admit what is happening around them.  I know I've presented a balanced snapshot of what is happening in a lot of homes around the country.  I did this documentary because I wanted to get people thinking and I think it's definitely done that.

My proudest moment from the experience has been witnessing the complete transformation of my class. Seeing them become really enthusiastic about cooking, so much so that they were all inspired to teach their friends has been amazing. To see the transformation of people like Mick, Claire and Natasha, was so important and inspiring for me because these projects can be hard and they make you question yourself and what it is that you're trying to achieve. To see my class Passing It On so incredibly well to their friends and then see those friends in turn Passing It On again, was just absolute proof that you can make brilliant things happen.

I was asked recently if I could be granted three wishes for Ministry, what would they be?  I've been thinking about it and my wishes are:

Wish number one: The government to support the setting up of a Ministry of Food headquarters in every town in the UK. My strategy would mean there would be long term change, and I think that within 3 to 5 years the centres would have done their job and could be used for other things. I do think that the next 5 years are incredibly important to the health of the UK. The decisions that we, and the government, make now will affect what happens to us in the next 10 to 15 years, and will really make an impact on the health of our kids.

Wish number two:  The government to not only commit to teaching every child how to cook at school, but to back this up with a really clear strategy that ensures this is done properly. All classes need to be relevant and engaging, and teachers need to feel empowered to teach them. We need to start giving teachers the love that they deserve. The number of home economics teachers is dwindling and I think this is because they have been unloved and unappreciated for many years.

My third wish would be, and this is the most important one really, that every member of the public would be inspired to Pass It On in some way, shape or form. In my view, to be an incredible person, to be an incredible family member, to be an incredible citizen, all you need to do is to pass on some basic recipes to a handful of friends and family that can't cook, once every two weeks, over a six-month period. That would really make a radical, radical difference. Pass It On really can work, as we've seen in Rotherham, but everyone has to do their bit to make it happen. I hope my show has demonstrated that it can be fun, easy and cheap to do, and that one person's effort can make a huge difference.

Hi Jamie!
I think what you are doing is fantastic. Its a shame it has ended but like they say once something has ended something new must start(dont know if they say that but it sounded good)I wouldnt take much notice of that julie women she is so negative about everything and i feel sorry for people round her all the time! I love cooking and have been known to take my pots and pans to people houses to show them how easy it is to cook good food for not alot of money! Im only 29 but I have such passion for food its untrue. I get so excited when i find those great little old farm shops. My mates think thats sad but you have either got it or you aint! My kids school dinners are really good and I cant thank you enough for changing the way our children eat!
Good luck in the future
Matt

Thanks Jamie, you're truly awesome in the human form :P

I loved Ministry of Food, it made me feel really excited for all the change going on in the world today. Besides changing people's cooking/eating habits can make a ripple-effect happen.

again, thanks a billion. smile We love you!!!!   kiss  whistle  tongue  big_smile

G'day Jamie,

We had the 3rd episode here & the inspiration & enthusiasm of people like Mick the Miner was awesome. I can tell it made you glad that you had given these people the opportunity to cook.

With regards to your wishes, it not only should be government policy in UK but the entire world. This IS a health problem everywhere. Sure, obesity can be caused by illness but its major cause is LAZINESS. It's too easy to go out & buy take away or ready made meals.

The number of members in these forums/blogs are testimony to the success of your hard work. A hell of a lot of chefs / cooks dont bother with passing on tips or recipes to others. Its your sacrifice that we all appreciate & I know we all thank you for the time you put in.

Hi Jamie, I was inspired by your programme and worried about our children and the world they will face in the future if we dont teach them basic cooking skills. My daughter and I cooked the meatballs recipe from the programme and she then invited 4 friends over and taught them to make the dish! One of her friends has now taught her Mum and her Grandma - and hopefully thus it will continue. I am now including my children in everything I cook - 10 & 8 is a good place to start and with luck their attitude to food and healthy eating and home cooking will grow and develop amongst their peer groups too! Thank you for inspiring me! Cx

Hi Jamie
you did a fantastic job with Rotherham and the people your class.  It is a shame we don't have someone like you here in Canada.  I have bought your book, Ministry of foos, and I have brought it around to my friend's homes and we have all cooked together using your recipes.
Continue on the great job  clap

Re: Recent interview I did for my friends on Myspace

Did it annoy anyone that whilst the girl was complaining that she couldn't afford to feed her kids, she sparks up another cigarette.  Well - stop smoking and you'd probably do alot better.  Without sounding patronising - I lived on 50p a day when I was going through a rough patch, and I still feel like I ate well, there really is no excuse, if you can afford takeouts, then you can afford to cook.

I think the problem is it costs people a lot to cook just 1 meal, having to buy a list of ingredients, but once you've stocked your cupboard with a few essentials you can always pull a meal together.  My secret was always pasta, with chilli and garlic oil.  That was it.  When money was available i'd add to it, i.e. some bacon, or chicken, but I always had the 4 basics available - olive oil, garlic, chilli and pasta.  Now i try to grow what I can, so I can afford better cuts of meat.

Well done Jamie for not giving up.

Re: Recent interview I did for my friends on Myspace

in Italy it's not so bad yet, but I think people are fascinated by ready meals to buy, so it's a fact of time and we will follow errors other people do abroad to copy what we think is progresso.
I was organizing with the help and presence of a good experienced cook, a kitchen course or a home made pass it on, because I felt seeing a real cook cooking, I mean one who knows how to make simple food into "stare bene " in  few plain steps and  big passion was worth being seen and appreciated by more people as possible.
With my disappoint the people I asked to come think they know already everything they are all masters in their kitchens with words.
For me the proof that you eat well is that when you come away from table you could eat and you desire to eat something more of some dish they have prepared, most of the time the smell in their kitchens is already telling you they have used too much of some ingredients as fats or super fried sauces.
What a pity! This is a signal for me I must be happy to shear what I learn and pass it on on the forum or blog.
So thank you Jamie for the great opportunity you give me and us all to be a sort of good neighbors even if we live so distant uno dall'altro

A bit sad but at the same time happy "'e vai e riit" as we say in friulano "she cries and smiles"......... after all is not so bad ........... there is always the foooooooorum to meet my neighbors.

I think it's really important what you're doing. I've just moved into student accomodation and the cooking skills of some of the others are scary and it shows how few people are being taught to cook. Also highlighting how important it is to learn  it at school. I was lucky in that my Mum taught me too cook, so it should also be a family thing I think!
