Is pork belly healthy? And if not, can I make it healthy?

My Daddio has given me some pork belly that needs using up tonight. I love pork belly and I usually just slow-roast it. However, I have a very health-conscious gym-fanatic healthy type coming for tea this evening, and I am wondering what I can do to stop him saying 'belly pork, isn't that full of fat?'

Any suggestions anyone?

Don't let him put you off! - slow roast the pork and its lean and healthy.

Do a search for Slow roast Pork belly with proper crackling:-

Hi Katie

I found this recipe some time ago and never cook belly pork in any other way now.  The crackling is crackly and the meat sooooooooo tender.  Some things are just so nice that's it's not at all important for them to be fat-free!

Mix 2 garlic cloves with 1 tbs bashed fennel seeds.
Rub over flesh of belly (not yours!).
Dry and score the skin.  Rub sea salt over.   (The recipe says to leave for half an hour and dust off excess salt, but I never seem to be organised enough to have the time).
Oven Gas 8.
Place on top shelf of hot oven - the intense heat will blister the skin and make the crackling cracklier.
Roast 30 mins (says the recipe - but one time I forgot it for almost an hour and, since I thought that was better, I always leave it for longer now) then turn heat down to Gas 5.
Cook 2  hours or so until meat is soft and tender.   Drool.......
Rest meat for 15 ins, as usual.

I wouldn't worry about serving any sort of food to a fitness fanatic. People who do lots of exercise can eat far fattier things as they spend far more time burning it all off!

Jamie has a recipe here:

Thanks everyone, but Dave turned up with some cooked chicken last night, so I made some cesaer salad dressing and anchovy potatoes and we had that instead.

I've looked at what Dad has actually given me and it says 'Streaky Slices' on the label. So I think I'll make it into some kind of sweet and sour thing. Unless anyone has any better ideas?

Ah - it rather depends on the thickness - streaky slices could describe it sliced almost as thin as bacon, on it can be anything up to 1/2 - 3/4 inch thick.

Unless its thick then sweet & sour wouldn't work very well.

Easiest way with slices of belly pork is to either grill or fry.

Pork is typically only about 10% fat, nowadays, and with a slow roasting method, a fair deal of that fat will be rendered away to leave a juicy, succulent piece of lean (enough) meat.

i know your pork belly is probably gone off by now - but you can still slow roast pork belly slices and they come out almost like boneless spare ribs in this case....

The Most Simple Pork Belly Recipe EVER!!

1 pack of Pork Belly Slices
1 tub of Hoi Sin Sauce

- i buy this chinese hoi sin sauce - really thick in a jar - almost like marmite

lay the belly slices on a rack in a grill pan
cover them in hoi sin sauce
- place in the middle of the oven at around 150 degrees
and slow roast for around an hour - turn over and do the same - covering the belly slices in more hoi sin sauce.

the fat melts in your mouth - the fatter the slices the tastier the dish...

in fact my son often eats all the fat and leaves the meat and says to me "but i dont like the fat dad"
