favorite colorful expressions

madamada got me thinking about those crazy sayings in every language, maybe we could make a list of them? -please include a definition!

"when life gives you lemons, make lemonade"
- try to turn a negative into a positive

"why add butter to bacon" (translated from Norwegian, anybody have the original?)
- leave well enough alone

"... as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs" (from Texas)
- that's very nervous!

"closing the barn door after the horse is gone"
- taking action after it's too late

Re: favorite colorful expressions

there are a few..    My Dad used to always say something in italian.. it translates roughly to

Eat and be quiet (or be still)  meaning don't ask questions about what it is... from his family when he was child growing up during the war..  either because it was something dodgy or something that had been hidden from confiscation.

I don't know how to spell the third word but maybe madamada will know better I will spell it like it sounds.

Re: favorite colorful expressions

This isn't an expression so much as a description, but in America, there is a type of house cat called a Tuxedo cat, because they look like they are wearing a tuxedo--black with white stomach and feet, little white faces with pink noses.

Well their name in Chinese is 2 words that translates into "Walking on snow looking for plum blossoms" and I think that is so beautiful--white tummy and feet from walking on the snow and pink nose from a plum blossom stuck to it!  So lovely...
