I am off on holiday tomorrow - anyone know if supermarkets in the US cater for wheat free products - we will probably be shopping at Publix, Goodings or Walmart and not sure whether to take some items with me!!

Wholefoods does (haven't ever been there but my friends were telling me about it)

The US hasn't embraced gluten free to their full capacity. I can't wait until they do because they are very good at getting lots of products on the market. It won't be too long before mcdonalds has gluten free items.

When we were in the States, we found that most supermarkets had some gluten-free products but, just like in the UK, you had to shop around. Wholefoods seems to be the best if you can find one. If not, it will be a case of just missing out the wheat and finding other things to eat (which is a pain, but can be done for a short time). It's also worth exploring the local, smaller food shops, as many of them have some wonderful wheat/gluten-free foods.

Whole Foods, My Organic Market, Wild Oats, Trader Joe's and any other organic shops and many big chain stores have at least some products. What part of the country? In every store, you can find corn meal, masa harina, corn tortillas. You may find that the same producers make wheat tortillas and there is cross contamination. I use them all the time, but maybe I'm not as sensitive. Be sure to look for an aisle dedicated to special products, they won't be kept side-by-side with products that contain wheat, you'll find a small freezer section that is gf, a small baking aisle for gf mixes and pastas.
We do have a lot of choices, they're not cheap if geared to replacing tradtitional gluten products, usually two or three times the price. I find it makes economic sense to simply eat differently, eat rice-based meals, tortillas, the diet goes very well with Mexican and other Latin cuisines, Asian, etc. Also, every store will have some Asian rice noodles, again I don't know if they could have some cross-contamination.

In some areas you will find a good organic market, near Disney World for sure, just ask the concierge for directions. Have some Cuban food in Tampa at the Columbia restaurant. If you're going to the Keys, you can enjoy some Gulf Shrimp, no hushpuppies for you though!

Dont worry MsPablo - dont fancy Hush Puppies anyway. Six days in Orlando and then down to Cape Coral for 11. Will just have to watch what I eat - I have done so well at sticking to this diet so far - feel better and have lost 8 pounds.
