how about some energy?

Hello to all!

i am a new mommy and i am breast feeding..(also i don't get a lot of sleep yawn )
i recently started to work again and i feel like i need some more energy and power..
do you know by experience any foods that give you an uplift?
that help you feel better and are not harmful for the baby?

because i am from Greece, it would be interesting to see
what mommies from other countries are doing on this matter..

thanks! smile

Re: how about some energy?

When I was breastfeeding I was starving for cream doughnuts! I just needed so many extra calories. That was when she was very little and growing fast.
She also liked waking all through the night so my sympathies are with you.
My theory is that babies need about 5 mums (some of them can be aunts etc) and you need 5 medals a day for doing most of it yourself.
My only advice is to keep surviving and eventually they grow up! wink
Sorry, I hope someone else has a miracle answer!

Re: how about some energy?

I'm a grandmother of a two month girl living a little far from us 40 mins by car, I agree with what Joy says about babies needing 5 mums, this was what happened in the past in great large families wherre help and stress were shared among many women, now women seem to be free from many burdens because they are made by household appliances ........... but babies are still their job and breast feeding is the most generous activity after giving birth. I'm sure Suné will answer your question better than a nonna like me, meanwhile feel you have my   clap  thumbsup for your being a young mum and even if tired and a bit weak enjoy this wonderful time you are living.
tanti tanti auguri to you and your baby
keep posting, my grand child's name is Elisabetta and that of your baby?

Re: how about some energy?

I read today articles on the healing, uplifting & energy giving properties of the spices tumeric & cinnamon.

I already eat a lot of spice but not every day - I will now be looking for ways to incorperate these into my diet as often as possible.

Re: how about some energy?

Congratulations on being a new mommy!  Na sas zisi!

Breastfeeding burns a lot of calories I hear, and you must need your strength.  There are so many rules about what you should and shouldn't eat I would hate to add my opinion.  Here's a great website about what you can/can't eat though.

http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-foods.html

There are certain foods that are super foods, and I try to eat some of these foods everyday.  They are full of nutrients and other properties that are good for you.

-blueberries (I have never seen them in greece but you may be able to buy them frozen and mix them into smoothies)
- walnuts
- almonds
- yogurt
- avocados
- flax seed
- honey

Some of these foods are controversial for babies, so take my advice with a grain of salt.  Good luck to you

Re: how about some energy?

It is worth having your iron levels checked, especially if you gave birth recently or lost a lot of blood or if you do not eat much iron-enriched foods. Low iron levels can make you very tired.

With my first child I lost 1 litre of blood and that took me about a month to recover from, I could hardly walk up and down our stairs. Luckily with my second, because my problem with blood loss was then known, medical intervention ensured I only lost 400ml. I felt like a completely different person, I had energy with the second baby.

I think the sleep deprivation is the worst and really uses up your energy. I used to have midnight snacks like crackers and muesli bars next to my breastfeeding chair for if I got hungry during the night while I was feeding baby. And of course drink lots of water, you do need extra water when breastfeeding.
