Hello everyone
I was inspired by Mr Oliver's recent US adventures... Especially the anti-restaurants in NYC.
I have the good fortune to be visiting New York on work next weekend and I've been trying to find some information on any that might be happening while I'm there. They're a cool idea and look like great fun - especially for a lone traveller in a new city.
My online searches for anti-restaurants haven't given me much, so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction in any way?
Any help would be hugely appreciated ![]()
Cheers!

I live in ny. I wish I could help you but I have no idea what anti-restaurants are.

They are unlicenced restaurants - no advertising etc - just word of mouth - great food but these places are not being checked for health & safety etc.
Rebel Restaurants if you like. ![]()

I can't imagine that such a thing is legal here in america. Sounds awful.

It's not legal, but it exists in this country. I guess the difference between this and a large dinner party is that money is exchanged and you don't know the other guests necessarily.

Oh wait a minute, I've heard of something like this but it is done in people's homes right?

Hi Dave,
I think these underground restaurants are a brilliant invention. Been reading alot about it lately. Here are some links. I would go to these places if living in london or New York.

Lots of these underground cooks are keen amateurs or chefs of established places who want to try out new things.
EDIT : Facebook gives a wealth of info ( most of these places have a facebookaccount to make bookings possible).

Hi Frizz, insurance wise all the guests in these kind of places are insured when something happens. It's like when you have some friends over for dinner and one of them would get ill by food you prepared then your insurance company will cover this.

I love the idea of it myself - it would be a great way to meet new people who love to cook & eat like I do - for someone such as myself who has no close friends with the same passionate interest in food & all that goes with it (in real life) in would be nice to have someone to cook & talk with etc.

Exactly what I was thinking Frizz!! If we would not live so far away from each other I'd certainly invite you.
