Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

Just planting my second crop of tomatoes & basil so they'll be ready when the current lot have finished. We're also picking our fresh corn, in fact, they're so sweet the kids are eating the cobs straight off the bush! Loosing the battle over the lettuce with the possums.

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

Thanks for your kind words, JoyYamDaisy..... I do love home grown vegies & fruit. We used to have an orchard once, which I do miss. I really miss my chooks & their fresh eggs, too. I don't mind sharing with the possums, though they can forget to leave a little for someone else!

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

I FINALLY cut back the climbing rose. It is a straggling thing, growing in an unsuitable place, but too hard to shift. It has spent summer investigating the temporary fence (they are building next door), and putting out huge stems to catch the unwary as they walk along our path. I cut back the stems waving over the path, but left it climbing up the fence. I hope it can enjoy it while it lasts. smile

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

I cut back my roses today as well, Joy.  We had a very warm winter and it was not kind to my roses.  Problems with disease and insects are starting early.  I hate to think what we will pay for the mild winter.

(yes, yes, I know I should be doing it right now instead of typing!)

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

Composted the garden last week (well got the kids to do most of the labour), and have just put in broccoli, peas, spinach, beetroot and carrot. Any tip for keeping the winter bugs away would be appreciated.

The rain, the rain, the rain...............& still it rains!
It's been weeks & weeks of wet & greyness.
Seedlings are quick to germinate, & then languish & become leggy straining towards sunshine that never seems to come!

Today I have sown: Cosmos, Godetia, Calendula, Radish, Lettuce, & Turnip.
& potted on: Tomato, Sweetcorn, Borage, Sunflower, Chrysanthemum.

Gardening in England is all about the triumph of Hope over Adversity.
Sometimes you will, sometimes you don't.
But there's always another year!
