Fancy Vegetarian Dinner Parties

Hello all!
It's my first post here so please be nice smile
My husband and I are vegetarian and regularly host rather lavish dinner parties (tasting menu type stuff with lots of courses) but I am sad to admit that I am running out of ideas. As I've only had my own home for 3 years, I haven't yet accumulated a great deal of more advanced or interesting cookbooks and I am at a loss when I look online and everyone seems to suggest a roasted veg lasagne or aubergine with a cheese topping. For me, that's everyday food. hmm I am having company this weekend and don't know what I'm going to cook! All ideas, recipes, etc would be greatly appreciated. help

You may want to look for inspiration from restaurants then search around for a recipes if needed.

"French chef Daniel Boulud offers a full vegetarian menu "

This place seems to be "raw" but the menu has some fantastic pics.

Welcome Laura,
Just so you are absolutley clear: that was a joke from Pakman.

My suggestion is to go (in a culinary way) to a new country.... where has your vegetarian travels taken you so far?

I cook a lot of modern English dishes at home as well as Italian, Mexican and Indian. If that's what you mean?

welcome to the forum lauraturnbull  big_smile

have you got the Ottilenghi book ...called  Plenty ? ... a lovely book that is filled with vegetarian recipes , one of my favorite books.

there are some threads here that you might get some ideas from..
http://www.jamieoliver.com/forum/viewto … 61&p=1
this one has some good links in ..
http://www.jamieoliver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=62130
well there are loads of recipes around the forum , but sorry I have no time for a detailed search at the moment .
There is a search function that you can acess at the side of this page, just click on search and it will take you to a page with a box on it that you can put in some key words to aid a search , it is then a question of looking through the threads to find what interests you.

Also you will find some lovely recipes that the forum members have added , click on food wise for that.. I am sure that allora andiamo added a whole load of veggie recipes. ( put her name in the search box and remember to click search by member box above the search ).

What books do you have and what are your favorites ?

This might seem a very daft question  but .... How vegatarian are you ?
Do you eat fish ?
Do you eat Parmasan cheese ?
Do yu avoid gelatine ?

We get all sorts of prple with different interpretatons of being vegetarian here n the forum and so if  we are looking for recipes to suggest , its helpful to know.

Do stay around the forum and join in the other threads , its always good to have a new 'face' around here and dont be put off by us if we seem a bit 'close knit' . as a few of us have been around for a while and so got to know each other well and the banter sometimes can put people off joining in... so dont let it and do join in. big_smile

Yes! That is exactly what I meant!

I recommend checking out some Turkish vegetarian recipes!
(or Moroccan, Iraqi, Sri Lankan, so many countries!)
Pick a cuisine and I bet I have a delicious vegetarian recipe to share!

Thanks for the great suggestions!
We are pretty 'hardcore' veggie if that makes sense haha. We don't eat cheese that uses animal rennet, non-veggie wine, etc. In other words we're really awkward to have round for dinner lol
With regards to cookbooks, I don't have a lot of veggie ones. I have just borrowed rose elliots veggie chic am a couple of Denis Cotter ones from my MIL but other than that I mainly use online recipes. I have a good few Jamie books and mags, but I would say that most of what I have is very much 'weeknight food', if you know what I mean. It was all very useful when I started cooking three years ago but it has become such a passion of mine and we don't eat any convenience food, so I feel I've outgrown them a bit.
I don't have the 'plenty' book you've mentioned but I seem to recall my mil may have that one too (my husbands sis was veggie until recently so they ate a lot of vegetarian food growing up). What sort of food is it?
And thank you for welcoming me in, I hope I can join the conversation big_smile

Wow, so many! I'm not sure I've ever had Turkish food, so I really don't have any idea of the types of flavours there, but I enjoy most things smile

Re: Fancy Vegetarian Dinner Parties

Most British cheese is OK then as it is mostly made with a vegetarian rennet .
Continental cheeses often use animal rennet as far as I know.
Also there is a vegetarian pamasan cheese avalible, but I am sorry that I cant remember who makes it at the moment.

see if you can borrow a copy of 'Plenty' as its a good book.

A lot of vegetarian recipes are more 'evey day' that are in most books, but most recipes can be elivated with a few additions to make the a bit more special.

I just tend to cook  nice and tasty vegtarian foods rather than fancy ones , when I am cooking for others I just make sure there is a good variety of dishes so that there is a lovley selection of things.

I can get hold of veggie parmesan no trouble smile There's a good one by Bookhams called Vegetarian Pasta Cheese (used to be called Not Just a Pasta Cheese), which I hear is recommended by Delia.
Don't get me wrong, I love everyday, wholesome, Cranks-style veggie food. I don't cook 'posh nosh' or whatever to be pretentious or a show off, I just absolutely love experimental food and nice presentation. It seems veggies just aren't as 'gourmet'.  lol
