I want to quit smoking...HELP!!!

Dear All,

Hi!
I haven’t been a member of this forum for so long, but I feel already very comfortable being in this group. Due to that, I would like to share something with you and ask for your advices and support esp. from those been in this situation. help

Well, I am trying to quit smoking. I am 30yars old and I have been a smoker for about 6 years and the last year I smoke about 10 cigarettes per day.
A week ago, I was very sick in bed with blocked nose, high temperature, and painful shore throat for 7 days. Surprisingly enough, although I smoke for 6 year, it has been 10years or so, since I last got so ill!  exclaim
Anyways, due to my sickness I didn’t have the appetite for a cigarette for a week, so I took the decision to do an effort to stop it. Unfortunately, when I got back to work I started again (two cigarettes the first day, and 4 the other two days). oops
In the company that I work for there are only a few places that are NOT allowed to smoke!!! You see in Greece, although, there is a law about not smoking in public place and work place, it is rarely reinforced. So what I mean to say is that in the department that I work everyone smokes, so even though I didn’t take with me cigarettes it always someone you can borrow a cigarette from. evil
Although, I have cut down cigarettes from 10 to 4 I cannot stop it at all. Yesterday, I have been to the pharmacists and ask what they have for quitting smoking and showed me patches and nicotine chewing gums.  I bought the last ones, but I still haven’t used them, as so far I am home with my parents and I usually don’t smoke in front of them. The most “dangerous” places for me are the office, or when going out. I hope that in these situations the nicotine gums will help. crossed

Does any one of you had any similar experience or is in the process of quitting it that can be of any help? help

Try this site (be warned the pictures are very graphic) http://www.quitnow.info.au/

Here in Australia smoking is banned in most public venues, and even then it's restricted. The governments here have realised what a risk smoking is to people who are present when someone smokes so they have been progressively banning it in areas where people congregate. It is still allowed on the street (really really annoying for when you are walking down a city street - as if we're not getting enough carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) from the traffic, we don't need it blown in our faces - sorry, it's a sore point with me) and in people's homes (obviously, it's recommended not to smoke around children or pregnant women).

That website gives help on how to quit http://www.quitnow.info.au/internet/qui … rs-booklet

you could also ask your doctor.

I know some ex-smokers (i've never smoked) and they are much happier not smoking - no smell, no cough, no health damage/early death and it gives them more money to spend on other things. A relative of mine quit about 10 years ago, her method was to buy a pearl ring that cost as much as cigarettes for a year, then she stopped smoking altogether and rubbed the ring when she felt the urge to - the result: a worn pearl ring and a non-smoker. It won't work for everyone but it was her method. Remember, smoking is an addiction, it's not as easy to stop as people think it is but it is worthwhile. I think after 3 years of not smoking you go back to the same risks of getting cancer/heart disease as a person who never smoked (don't quote me, I can't remember where I got that)

Good luck!

Re: I want to quit smoking...HELP!!!

Hi and welcome to the forums.

I was a "pack a day" smoKer until I was an invited speaker to a conference in CT and a guest lecturer in Ohio.

All flights out of Oz are "smoke free". Had visions of me going crazy (nicotine withdrawal) during the 14hr trip over the Pacific.

Stopped smoking a week before I left. Used patches (allergic to tape) and gum (didn't chew, just kept it in my mouth). Gum chewing doesn't do it for me.

Was "clean" for 10 yrs which involved two close family deaths.

Fell off the wagon when everyone else in the family were smoking. Couldn't stand being alongside my OH-smelt like an ashtray.

Well, that's my excuse. We all resolved to give up at NY. No one has.

Have to stop as it's effecting my health and is a large amount of money down the drain via the ashtray.

Perhaps we should make a personal plan to give up together.

Good luck, anyway.

Re: I want to quit smoking...HELP!!!

Hi lea -

I was a heavy smoker until about 16 years ago when I decided I had to quit.  Apart from the cost, my 6 year old god-daughter kept telling me it was bad for my health.  She obviously had more sense than I had!

I was recommended to a General Practioner who also specialised in hypnosis.  The session lasted about 40 minutes and was painless.  All I remember is he kept telling me it was a dirty, filthy habit and when I lit a cigarette the taste would be so awful that I would never want another one.

His fee was £40 and I can assure you it was the best £40 I have ever spent in my life.  I have had no any inclination to smoke, in fact the smell of stale tobacco nauseates me.

Good luck and if you try the hypnosis I sincerely hope it works for you like it did for me.

Good for you tanya. What differences did you notice when you stopped smoking?

Here's an extension to that original website I posted on getting ready to quit. http://www.quitbecauseyoucan.org.au/bro … nerID=1826

Cigarettes are addictive and like all addictions it's not always as simple as making the decision to do it. That website has tips on how to change your life to support your decision and make it easier for you.

I'm totally for people quitting smoking - I know it can be a very hard thing to achieve. But for me, it means one less person who I have to walk past on the street and cop a face full of smoke and maybe one less outdoor restaurant I have to avoid because people will smoke when others are eating. Here in australia people can still smoke in outdoor areas of restaurants and cafes. It's annoying because us non-smokers would like to sit outside and enjoy our meal but that generally doesn't happen because someone lights up. It's just rude when other people are eating. The one place I went to where there was almost no outdoor (or indoor) smoking was the US. I saw one person smoking and there was another passerby making disparaging comments about it. It's the one thing I really like about the US. Italy was also good, people kept it to the designated areas and were polite about it, not letting it affect other people as much. The UK was terrible (this was 2005) - we had to eat very early to avoid it in all restuarants and pubs. Not much fun - we had to dedicate a smokey clothes bag of dirty washing when we came home (no time to ash while we were there).

Rabbit, our local swimming pool, a huge place (couple of acres maybe?) is smoke free, people wanting to smoke have to leave the centre and go to a designated place in the car park. There is somewhere to sit & shade.

I did think it a bit odd not to have one inside though when almost the whole place is out in the open.

It was a local council decision.

Re: I want to quit smoking...HELP!!!

Dear friends,

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support and advices.

Hear about some of you advising me to talk to my doctor, and hearing that I feel that in Greece we are years back! There are a few private institutes for quitting smoking but I feel that I have to be very desperate in order to pay a considerable amount of money for quitting. I will try first on my own. So far it is the second day without cigarette and I only needed a gum twice.

As far as what TANYA wrote, I really believe that hypnosis or acupuncture can help, but I am afraid I have no access to any of this. As much as I believe in their power, I can say that I am intimidated by it. I mean it is very easy that wrong "therapy" from a supposed specialist can do you a lot of harm.

Tomorrow will be my first day at work without smoking and it will be hard. I will keep you posted how the week goes.

Re: I want to quit smoking...HELP!!!

Hi again lia....

I was a bit apprehensive when I went for hypnosis, but this is only natural.  If you ever get access to a doctor who is qualified in hypnosis go for it.

Another thought, I have a friend who lost a great amount of weight just by cutting down on calories and a lot of willpower, no weight watchers or slimming clubs.  Whenever she had an urge to "EAT" she cleaned her teeth and she said it helped.

Maybe you could try this.  I'm sure when your mouth feels lovely and fresh the last thing you want to do is light up a smelly old cigarette.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Hi WR....It was quite a while before I felt any real benefit.  I had no withdrawl symptoms, I could smell the roses, not the cigarette smoke, my house felt cleaner and fresher.   Oh, and I saved a lot of money.   All in all it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.  The only drawback.....I put on weight.....but that's another story.
