The Herring Festival
Helsinki, Finland
October
Many small boats come to the main harbor off the Esplanade in the city center and from the back of the boats sell an amazing variety of different types of homemade marinated herring, sweet black bread and tyrni-mehuu, a juice extracted from the seabuckthorn berry, very tart, high in vitamin C.  The festival also features wonderful local fish dishes such as fresh water sardines fried whole, salmon smoked on planks.  During the final days of the festival, old wooden sailing ships pull into the harbor and dock.  A few of the sellers offer their own handmade sweaters made from wool from their farms.

Wisteria Festival
Kameido-tenjin Temple
Tokyo, Japan
April (Peak bloom period of wisteria, this can vary)
The garden around this small temple is breathtaking when the wisteria is blooming, immortalized by Hiroshige, a Ukiyoe artist in a famous  woodblock print.

The foods range from popular snacks for kids such as salted ume plum lollipops and hot bean filled cakes to full lunches, fish grilled on sticks, octopus, scallops, sweet potato fries, omelettes, etc.  If you're in the mood for a sit-down lunch, there's an excellent soba noodle shop on the main street leading up to the temple, the noodle making is demonstrated in the shop window out front.

Elmira maple syrup festival
worlds  largest 1 day maple syrup festival..   yearly
the mainstreet of Elmira is shutdown and various vendors and food stalls are setup , a separate tented area just off the main street is  set up and local charity groups cook pancakes which are then smothered in syrup. sugarbush tours of maple syrup operations on local farms are available on horsedrawn wagons.  The food vendors up and down the street have become more of an attraction for us than the pancakes.. Great greek food stall and full pig roast rigs, belgian waffles and deep fried mars bars are just the tip of the things available.

The Taste of Tasmania or "The Taste" is a 7 day festival, held from the end of December to beginning of January, as part of the Hobart Summer Festival, with a fantastic array of international cuisine and Tasmanian wine and beverages.

Barrel tasting weekends.
March 6-8 and 13-15

Sample wines soon-to-be-released at many wineries in the West Sonoma County area.
Pay $20 for a glass (yours to keep) at the first stop and use it for the next three days.
Most wineries also offer complementary food.
This has really grown in the past few years.  When I started going (around 10 years ago) it was only one weekend. (The price was also only $5!)

Re: Food Festivals(also drink/beer/wine festivals)

We went to the Hunter Valley, grape growing region in NSW, for the Jazz In The Vines festival last October.  What a fantastic day.  Bus pick up and drop off to our accommodation - no problems with having a few drinks!  Took our own picnic, table & chairs and sat under the trees enjoying a fantastic day out and some lovely wines.

It's on the agenda again for 2009.
