debs i have to have it and my mum has to have it and we're both more than happy - our doc gave loads of useful info especially about the fact that it's basically the flu vaccine which has been around for ages except with a minor tweek and it's not a 'live' vaccine. reeeeeally safe, much safer than catching swine flu when you have complications.
i get to have it because i'm my mum's flu friend! woohoo!

It's not the media's job to inform you of the potential side effects/health risks of the vaccine. They sell papers. They are not medical experts, and their reports should have nothing to do with your decision to have the shots or not.
It's your doctors' (one or more, if you need a second opinion) job to inform you of the potential risks and benefits, and they should be the source you trust and listen to.
Edit: I'm sorry if that's a bit blunt, but it's your health: don't faff about with it, it's the most important thing.

Here it seems to be mostly younger people who are getting the swine flu. I asked where I get my other treatments and they said they I wasn't in the group who were eligible to get the shots. There is a limited supply here as Ms P pointed out and the state of California has decided who gets the vaccines and who doesn't.

I hear it is limited in the US because they will only use one specific method for producing vaccine that has been around for a long time.. There is another method that produces the vaccine much much faster but FDA won't approve it yet.
There has been some really interesting information in a few recent issues of Scientific American about swine flu and H1N1 in general.. Apparently they are starting to think this outbreak isn't a brand new strain but a mutation of the H1N1 that was Spanish flu in early 1900's and also showed up again mutated in the 1970's . There is strong evidence that ppl who were exposed to those flus actually have some immunity to this verison of H1N1 and many ppl who had the vaccine for it in 1970's also have some protection to this one.
I don't have an option to get the shot right now but will be able to get it later this month or early Dec. I think my wife has already had swine flu last week but don't know for sure and I had a couple days where I thought I felt something coming on then nothing.. I am wondering if being exposed to the 1970's one had any effect there? l
Will still get the shot though If my Doctor recommends it.

My OH got offered the vaccine yesterday as he has very bad asthma but he doesn't want to go for it because he has heard people have had bad reactions to it (again the media). I have persuaded him into at least going to the doctor to ask about side effects etc. I think you should have a chat with your doctor then probably go for it Debs ![]()

When I was in hospital in early September, the staff occasioonally discussed whether to get the jab, and most of them were pretty sure they wouldn't bother, as for the general population, including themselves, this was turning out to be a very mild form of flu.
It's different for people at risk, though, as you must know, Debs - we've already had deaths here in Spain. If your doctor thinks you need it, perhaps you should take his advice ![]()

I felt last week like I was coming down with something for several days but it passed and I'm fine now. Who knows? I got the regular flu shot a few weeks ago.
I guess the most important thing now is to keep children protected since they seem to be the main population targeted.

Targeted?? You make it sound deliberate, Eddie

Ok so this has been fun, but wouldn't it have been much more of a laugh if we were all sat on a round of sofas sipping some delicious wine???
I love all the imput guys, I am scared and even doctors are human, but there doesn't seem to be any other sensible alternative. Air bubbles are just not practical. ![]()

I am a huge advocate of it and don't understand the hysteria that people have around this.
It is like any other flu shot. Here in Australia it was in vials that the doctor drew up the dose from as the companies didn't have time to bring out single doses.
Would you have a normal flu shot every year?
Trust me, you do not want to get H1N1. Pregnant mothers have been on ventilators here in Australia and there have been deaths of the mother and child.
