school lunches in ventura (california)
Love watching the show.
Sad to read these articles this week in our local newspaper:
Oxnard Union High School District officials will have a multinational company run their cafeterias for another year.
Sodexo Inc. was hired by the district in February 2009 to help manage its food services department. On Wednesday night, the district board voted 4-1 to extend the contract through June 2012.
The company receives about $2.2 million annually, a large portion of which pays for food.
Trustee Socorro Lopez Hanson voted against the move. She wanted the district to move toward offering meals cooked from scratch using locally grown products, instead of prepackaged food.
"It's long been a desire of mine ... to bring a farm-to-school model to our district," Hanson said Wednesday. "This is a program where everybody benefits."
The food would be fresher and of better quality, she said, and it's cost-effective at other districts.

Thanks for your input. It can be done! The school board is not appointed but voted in. People need to get involved and start going to board meetings (they're not closed) and voicing their concerns. Find out who supports the food service being handed over to a corporation and then vote them out. It's not going to happen unless concerned people do something.
It's happening up here in Sonoma County. It can happen down there in Ventura.
