Wondering what to do about all the white cabbage butterflies laying all their eggs.   There are so many of them this year, probably because we are no longer in a drought and there is alot of fresh leafy growth.

If you are organic.............washing up water...............the anti-surfactant properties of the soap helps
Otherwise............get the bug spray out & do underneath the leaves. (When it's VERY bad, I resort to the stuff you dilute in a sprayer..........if you time it right you only need spray once, twice tops)

Those white cabbage moths have been laying in my garden too Sheryl!
For a few years I stuck white paper butterfly shapes around, but have lately read that this doesn't particularly deter them.
I wish some nice caterpillar predators would come to my garden and eat them all up!

Floating row cover works, if your climate allows for its use, it can make things a bit warmer, get the type that's not meant to keep in heat if your climate is already warm, but it can keep too much moisture in as well if you get too much rain.  You remove it at a safe stage . . . ask your local agricultural extension service or nursery how and when.

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

Thanks for those hints MsPablo and Kye,
I thought the rocket was shredded by the hail on Christmas day and I have just been waiting (in a vague way) for them to recover. Only realised this morning that they have been eaten to the stalk. And that might have started on Christmas day whistle
I can't see any caterpillars now.
My garden is so small (a collection of pots) that if I can be vigilant I might be able to catch the caterpillars small.

Note to self: don't be vague - be vigilant!

I'd love to try hedgehog shapes! I wonder if Australian white cabbage moths know what they are!
When I first read  your post I thought you meant a floating row cover over one pot in a sort of hedgehog shape. Which is how I would have to do it! And might yet! smile

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

Joy, I have a concrete/plaster (?) hedgehog in my garden and no, they are not an animal we have here, but they're just so cute.  I believe they have scared off the slugs, no it's really the birds that take care of them.  I never kill anything in my deeply shaded garden, seems to be just fine, few little bug holes now and then, no biggy.

Hmm, you could actually use a floating cover over a pot, but ask a friend for a small piece so you don't have to spend on a big sheet of it.  You can wash it out (if needed) and keep using it year-after-year.  Another helpful hint -  I wore gloves to handle it as the 'fabric' it's made of feels really coarse and unpleasant.
