Remember the apron?

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material.  But along with that, it served as a potholder for  removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..
And when the weather was cold Grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the autumn, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
And.....
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.  Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill
to thaw.

Re: Remember the apron?

I don't have one at the moment - I have been looking around for the right one, I am a little bit too fussy for my own good.

And mincepie, what a fantastic read!  clap  clap

Re: Remember the apron?

Ah yes, Aprons. I can't tell you how many dress (work) shirts I have thrown away because I didn't put on my apron. I dress for work and THEN cook breakfast and make a carry in lunch. I have 2 or 3 always on a hook in the kitchen. Also good for food that drops off my fork onto... the apron of course. As a matter of course, many of the BBQ teams wear them and we even put our team name on them. That way we know which one is ours after the victory celebration!

Great topic!!!!!!

Re: Remember the apron?

I have a couple of aprons that I wear every day ( to prevent greasy spots appearing on my clothes  tongue ) and I would be lost without them. They are not pretty but they do the job. I have only been wearing them for a couple of years and I love them...so much less damage done to my clothes  thumbsup

I have a few aprons but hardly ever wear them.  Honestly,  I forget until it is too late.

Re: Remember the apron?

I have never got into the habit of aprons, but I would like to. I really need ones that not only cover my entire front but my sleeves as well!
Hmmm, but maybe they wouldn't work. For health reasons I do my kitchen work in short sections, I'd be putting aprons on and off all day.
It might be easier just to change my clothes often! whistle

Re: Remember the apron?

I have many aprons and they are my beloved thing to wear, if you make me choose between an evening dress and an apron I choose the second one, if I like it. I do not like sweet frou frou ones, those are for my nipotina, even if she has a plain one to help me, I collect real working aprons with brands, but I do not use them, the one I like is one I took home with me from the school kitchen, and yes it's a passpartout ready for many uses, in my orto, and garden ................ mincepie you have been following me around with my apron in different seasons

wave grandma wink  lol  clap for your great piece of literature exclaim

Re: Remember the apron?

I have a few, mostly from when I worked in a pizza place. But I don't usually wear them, I just wear old clothes. If I do wear an apron it has to wrap around my hips as I tend to wipe my hands on my hips.

Re: Remember the apron?

I have an apron, that I don't wear as often as I should.  But when I get it out, everyone is always interested, as it normally means something interesting is happening in the kitchen wink
