Mexican BLT
Hi there,
I was looking through Jamie's 15 minute meals and the Mexican BLT looks delicious, and pretty suitable for a lunch time, although I'll be cooking for someone who doesn't eat tomatoes.
Can anyone think of a suitable substitute in this recipe, or just for general sandwiches that a tomato would go nicely with?!
Thanks,
Screawn

Re: Mexican BLT
Tomatoes are tricky to substitute.
The first thing that pops into my head is slices of plum. However, this strikes me even as I write it as a little bizarre, and I should warn you that I am still recovering from Hogmanay lack of sleep and may be making no sense. But, well, they are sort of juicy and sweet-sharp, aren't they? And red...
I don't know.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply! I thought about Plums but I think they might be too strong a flavour. Might consider beetroot, which isn't all that much like tomatoes but might go okay!

Mexican BLT...... I'd say avocado and/or cucumber.

Re: Mexican BLT
I believe the dish already has avocado.
If you can get tomatillos or even a jarred tomatillo salsa, but this dish has so many fresh things going on and radishes, etc. so you could simply leave off the tomatoes. Jicama is very nice cut into fine strips, but it's crunchy and mild, not really the same texture or flavor as tomato. Just use a little extra lime, it'll be great.

I watched a show on the food network the other day and the restaurant used a tomato jam, instead of the sliced tomatoes. It looked really delish.

Okay so cherry tomatoes in the guacamole...forget about the tomato!
Maybe sprinkle a little hot sauce on the guac during assembly.

Re: Mexican BLT
When you say your friend doesn't eat tomatoes, is this an allergy, or just a preference? If it's a preference, is it for all tomatoes everywhere in every context, or specifically for raw tomatoes or tomatoes in tomato shape? e.g. my Mum hates raw tomatoes or recognisable cooked tomatoes, but is fine with tomato sauces and chopped tinned tomatoes in hot dishes.
Just thinking you could add tomato flavour with a bit of tomato puree or similar, but if it's an allergy you'll have to avoid them altogether.
Missing them out is the simplest option.

a little out of the box ,but how about muskmelon aka rock melon or somewhat mistakenly called cantaloupe . It really works well with salty pork as evidenced from melon and prosciutto

Re: Mexican BLT
Thanks for all the good advice guys! I decided to just sack it and throw the tomatoes in anyway - I didn't actually realise they were in the guacamole!
However, Ashen, you did make me go out and get some prosciutto to have melon / prosciutto tonight!
