This is Kita.  She's been with us since May, and she likes to "help" by digging.

Re: What did you find in your garden today?

Its not what I found but what I can't find, something is eating (devouring) the basil and mint.  I don't know what it is, I have looked all over it for green caterpillars etc but nothing!!!

Re: What did you find in your garden today?

One of my Pieris japonica shrubs has blackened leaves from the extreme cold we've been experiencing.  I'm hoping it will revive.  The same happened to my Daphne 'Carol Mackie' several years ago and it survived, but I'm not sure if it'll make it this year.  Our zone estimates the lowest temperature should be -12.2 C. / 10 F. and we have had temperatures quite a bit lower and they're going even lower apparently this weekend or early next week.

No point in fretting, but it's sad to lose a shrub that has taken many years to reach the top of the fence and is one of my favorites (the Pieris).

People claim that the extreme cold will insure better crops.  I suppose that is because it kills disease and insects, but I am not sure if there are other benefits to the soil structure, etc.

Re: What did you find in your garden today?

That has happened so fast, Coco (or so it seems).

You'll be really hooked on gardening smile.

Nothing yet (it's before coffee) but in the last few days, parsley and chillies for the spaghettoni with clams; bay leaves and thyme for the chicken, veg and noodle soup and basil for five jars of pesto (that my daughter took back to Sydney with her).

I'm a balcony gardener, too smile.
