Georgia intro
Jamie finds himself in the Deep South as he visits the state of Georgia in the fifth episode of Jamie’s American Roadtrip. One of the country’s poorest states and birthplace of the civil rights movement, Jamie embarks on a recession roadtrip across the state.
His journey becomes an exploration of communal dining and Southern hospitality. He drops in on a ladies’ tea party in Savannah, finds out what being a barbecue pit master is all about at a roadside barbecue joint, mucks in at a soul food restaurant and is invited to join in a big family tradition by Lonnie ‘Bubba’ Smith... an annual barbecue competition in Florida.
Jamie accepts the invitation and, with a few of the friends he’s made along the way, heads south to try his luck against some of America’s most experienced barbecue chefs.

Georgia recipes
Because I’d always wanted to do a proper American-style road trip, I decided to rent a camper van and drive myself through the lovely state of Georgia. From what I saw, it had a bit of everything going for it. Doing a road trip meant I got to meet all sorts of wonderful people, and everyone, without exception, threw their doors open and welcomed me with plenty of warmth and plenty of food!
