The work that you do is amazing. How did you start?
Five years ago I passed by a food processing factory and I saw them throwing good food away. I asked if I could take the food as I would find people who really need it.
What have been some of the challenges?
One of the day-to-day challenges is having enough money to go forward with my mission and having enough food each night to feed the more than 110 people that wait for me.
What drives you to work so hard day in and day out?
God is the one who guides me and gives me the strength to continue with his mission. Another thing that motivates me is that I like to share what I have with those in need. If you share then you are ok with God.
When was the last time that you had a holiday?
My last holiday was before I started my mission 5 years ago.
Are the people that you help very appreciative?
Yes, with a big smile they always say, 'Thank you Colombia' and 'God bless you'. They also say 'I will see you tomorrow and if it was not for you I would have nothing to eat.'
Was there any help available to you and your family when you arrived in the States?
No, but my mom was here and we supported each other the three of us.
Is it just the immigrants that you help or are there other homeless people that you assist as well?
Yes, there are other homeless people who I help as well.
You rely on the kindness and donations from others, how have these people found out about you?
They found me through media such as TV, the internet, newspapers. People also pass by 73 and Roosevelt Avenue and see what I do.
Do you know of anyone else doing the same thing as you in New York?
No, not every night.
If you could have three wishes granted for the work that you do what would they be?
My first wish is to be healthy and keep doing the mission that God put on my hands until he wants me to.
My 2nd wish is to dedicate myself to this mission as a full-time job, and give them not only dinner but breakfast too.
And my third wish is to have a bigger place where I can cook, store and have everything that I need to hand.
