haiti disaster relief supported by fresh one charity lunch
Thu 21 Jan 2010 @ 16:26 | story by Danny McCubbinMoved by some of the horrific images that are coming out of Haiti after the recent earthquake, an enthusiastic group of staff from Fresh One (Jamie’s TV production company) gave up their morning to cook a lunch to raise money for the relief fund. This is not the first time that we have enjoyed a lunch that was cooked by Fresh One as they raised money for the terrible Asian Tsuanmi of 2005. Production Manager Isabel Davis said, “We simply had to do something after seeing the devastation that the earthquake has caused in Haiti.” We work in a food environment with fully equipped kitchens so there was no need to go looking for a suitable space to cook for a large number of people.

The girls serving lunch
The Fresh One team enlisted the help of Nick Gulhane who runs an Indian cooking school called The Spice Monkey. On the menu for the day was lentil dalh, spinach and aubergine curry, onion bahji and pea and spinach curry. I asked Nick if there were any challenges cooking for about 70 people and he said the only challenge was having to transfer large industrial sized pots between the two kitchens in which they were cooking. He said that he had brilliant assistants in the staff from Fresh One. I also congratulated him on taking time out from his busy schedule to make the lunch. He said that it is not only the devastation that this earthquake has caused in Haiti that has moved him but also how difficult it has been to get to the survivors to provide them with food and water. Nick said, "It's appalling what has been transpiring and it’s a good thing that the staff have done here today. We enjoyed cooking for everyone. I hope as the staff ate the lunch they were mindful of what is going on in the rest of the world."

The lunch was simply delicious and to date the team has raised over £400 and supported awareness of the situation in Haiti.
