jamie's italian opening in cambridge

Fri 19 Feb 2010 @ 17:17 | story by Danny McCubbin

Situated in a stunning grade 2 listed building in Cambridge – Jamie's Italian will open on Monday the 22nd of February. The Jamie's Italian team are thrilled that one of their star Chefs Lorenzo has relocated from Jamie's Italian in Brighton to be head chef in Cambridge.

When each restaurant opens there is always a trial period where guests are invited to dine at a reduced price. This is an important step in the launch of any Jamie’s Italian as it gives all of the staff the opportunity to iron out any challenges to ensure that everything runs smoothly when the restaurant opens. I caught up with two of the diners this week - Ray and Heather Jolley who had lunch at the restaurant.

I said that Jamie has been tweeting about the fact that the building is very beautiful and Heather said "The old library is a beautiful building with a large dome in the center of the main eating area. Our first impression was a very busy, lively, light and airy restaurant with lots going on and we liked the fact that you could see the chefs preparing the meals. This was our first visit to a Jamie's Italian and I must say that I thought that it may not be the best place to go for a quiet meal. Our waitress was really friendly and knowledgeable and she said that there were quieter areas adjacent to the bar and in an upstairs room."

My favorite dish at Jamie's Italian is the chicken cooked under a brick and each time I dine there I cannot go past ordering this. I asked Heather what they ate and she said "Ray had the rose veal parmigiana which he really enjoyed and I had the carbonnara which was delicious: I liked the idea of a smaller portion being available as this has not been offered in any Italian restaurant we have visited. Then to dessert, we were very impressed with the tiramisu, absolutely amazing, never tasted anything quite like it and I loved the addition of orange & lemon zest which was delicious."

I then asked what made the place special: "The food was beautifully presented and we were amazed by the different flavors used, it was certainly much better than the many Italian restaurants we have frequented. We were impressed by her knowledge of the ingredients and she also offered help with the selection from the menu."

Would they return? "We will definitely go back and all in all a very enjoyable first taste of amazing Italian food, we will be recommending it to our friends."

1. Angela Whitehead Sun 27 Jun 2010 @ 21:01 My husband and I were off to Browns our first time out for nearly 7 years without our beautiful kids Angus 7 and Ailsa 2. We live in Hererfordshire and traveled over to see my Ma and Pa take in the beach and let Mum and Dad indulge in the children while we indulge in each other. On our way to Browns we got lost and luckily after asking directions we were adsvised not to go to Browns and try Jamie Oliver's just round the corner.
My birthday became even better if that was possible.
We enetred a buzzing, exciting amazing building, full of laughter, chit chat and the wonderful aroma of gorgeous Italian delights.
Lee was our waiter and the way he described the pork belly even I was sold and i'm a vegetarian ish! My husband Adrian had the pork belly and was in heaven.
From the first glass of Proseco to the mammouth olives and all the way to the side dish of 'posh chips' we laughed, loved and enjoyed evey mouthful of all the different, incredible flavors put together so cleverly.
2. Edna Johnston Wed 07 Apr 2010 @ 18:00 My husband and I ate for the first time at Jamie's yesterday. I thought the food was wonderful. It was quiet when we visited, so the service was good. Not sure what it might be like when busy. We ordered ice cream. We usually share this type of dessert. However, the portion was tiny. I think you need to increase the portion size, very disappointing. Will go again though, as the food was so good.

4. Steph Sun 04 Apr 2010 @ 09:30 The Q. outside was waiting for 90 mins + to get in when I passed by yesterday, why would you?, go home make pasta, toss it around with an anchovy and some basil and be happy.
5. kate Fri 02 Apr 2010 @ 13:07 Ate at the Jamie's in town last night. Very disappointing service, sat for ages before anyone bothered with us- always seems to happen if their is a pair of you- larger tables seem to have staff all over them. After three attempts I finally got the correct drink. One American tourist next to me waited 30mins before anyone bothered with him. The food was very good though- but it didn''t seem like anyone was front of house.

Sharper please!
6. Sue Wed 31 Mar 2010 @ 09:36 We had a fabulous time at Jamies Italian on Saturday. Well worth the wait outside. (Expect the queues to be long.) The food was excellent. Great atmosphere. The waitress was called Amanda and explained all of the dishes to us and was very patient while we spent time choosing. We were interested in the building and she took the time to tell us the history of the place. We will definitely go back when we visit Cambridge again.
7. Linda Christy Mon 15 Mar 2010 @ 19:20 I have just had dinner at Jamie's Cambridge restaurant and it was utterly awful.
The chicken was undercooked, badly cut and one part was inedible.
The wine was also very poor quality and overall, this was a very disappointing dining experience.

8. Claire Sun 28 Feb 2010 @ 10:20 My sister & I had lunch yesterday at Jamie's Italian, we were so so lucky to get in as they had to close after about 15 mins of opening due to the computerized ordering system crashing!
Really lovely waiter Lee who was english & the food was wonderful although we wanted to have the Wild Mushroom Raviloi and was told they didn't have it.
I will be going again very soon as we really enjoyed it.
Best Tiramisu I have ever had!

10. Polly Lodge Tue 23 Feb 2010 @ 18:23 My husband and I went along to Jamie's Italain on Thursday 18 Feb and had an amazing meal! My brother Jos is one of the managers there so not only did we go along to support him and the rest if his team but to enjoy some fantastic food as we are a big fan of Jamie and the way he has such a passion about good food and quality. We were not let down and enjoyed every second being there! We will most certainly be going again!
11. Barry Croucher Tue 23 Feb 2010 @ 13:41 I pressed my nose up against the window last wednesday and saw Gennaro hard at work with some of the chefs, looks great! I had a fab meal at Jamie's Italian in Brighton last summer so I'm delighted to see one open up on my doorstep, brilliant building too!

Best of luck with it!

15. Martyn Payne Sat 20 Feb 2010 @ 20:35 I was in the building opposite on Monday night watching a gig and it was seriously loud outside. Really hope that doesn't affect the vibe in the restaurant as I will deffinately be bringing the wife up for a meal as soon as possible.
