sustainable wild alaska pollock

Fri 04 Mar 2011 @ 11:01 | story by Alexa Proctor

Sustainable wild Alaska pollock is a great eco-conscious seafood choice and available all year round. Alaska’s most abundant seafood species, Alaska pollock, is a lean, mild and tender member of the cod family. Swimming freely in the icy waters of the North Pacific Ocean, they feed only on natural marine life to build up a healthy, firm flesh. Wild Alaska pollock is low in fat and a natural source of protein, vitamins, calcium and Omega-3 oils. It is also the most versatile of all whitefish varieties and great value for money too, making it the perfect choice for your everyday meals.

Sustainability
Alaska is a world model for Sustainability. This commitment dates all the way back to Alaska becoming a state in 1959, when Alaskans wrote sustainability into their Constitution – calling for all fisheries to be sustainably managed. In this way, Alaska promises to provide wild-caught and sustainable seafood for generations to come.

The secret to Alaska’s success lies in two basic principles:
• Responsible fisheries management and sustainable fishing practices take care not to harm the fish, other marine plants and animals, or the environment.
• Fish populations are never overfished.

The Alaska commitment to sustainability, as mandated in the State Constitution, has time and again proved the effectiveness of strict, science based, precautionary fisheries management. No Alaska seafood has ever been listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. It is such a precautionary and conservative approach that Alaska’s fisheries have become a model for the world.
