sydney-siders crave jamie's ministry of food

Fri 09 Sep 2011 @ 13:38 | story by

Jamie’s Ministry of Food Australia has joined forces with the University of Sydney to serve up a feast of healthy cooking classes on Friday, October 21, as part of Sydney’s famed international food festival, Crave.
The lawns in front of the historic Quadrangle building will be transformed into a giant hands-on cooking class for a day when Jamie’s Ministry of Food will show participants how easy it can be to prepare a simple, tasty and healthy meal. On the menu, is Jamie Oliver’s Cracking Burger and his tasty Chargrilled Chicken Kebab.

The collaboration is between Jamie’s Ministry of Food and the University of Sydney’s new research center which aims to significantly reduce the personal and social burden of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease by transforming the way we eat, work and live. The event is aimed at inspiring people back into the kitchen, cooking meals from scratch, instead of opting for easier food options, such as take away.
“Lack of knowledge, confidence and skills are the main barriers which stops people from cooking. When you know how to cook, you’ve got control over your life and your health. Cooking is one of the most important things we can ever learn in life,” says Alicia Peardon, General Manager Jamie’s Ministry of Food Australia.

Figures from the National Preventative Health Taskforce show that being overweight or obese affects more than 60 percent of Australian adults and 25 percent of Australian children. The most recent projections indicate that there will be an extra 6.7 million obese Australians by 2025. This frightening statistic demonstrates an urgent need for action. Joel Smith, spokesman for the University’s research center said the event would bring together University of Sydney students, staff and the public to learn about healthy cooking and how easy it is to incorporate it into daily life. “We were inspired to put together this event with Jamie’s Ministry of Food because both organizations are working, in rather different ways, to provide people with the experience and skills to make better food choices. Both organizations want to educate and help more people be able to cook low cost, time efficient and delicious healthy meals.” Jamie’s Ministry of Food is a practical solution to the problems of obesity and diet-related disease and a successful response to the lack of basic food skills in the population. The program inspires and empowers change in the way individuals and their families eat, and how they think about food.

1. joanne gittel Wed 09 May 2012 @ 16:21 Hi jamie, every one has already said how much you are an inspiration to eat healthy. And dont see why you are not supported by the government or the presedent to beat obesity. When of all people it should be our leaders that assure they guide us the right way or at least give people an option to prevent a pproblem. There shoud be a lesson in every school as a general basic life skill such as cooking class. I wish you the best with your chalenge to healthy living. And you have all my support!!!
2. Christeen Eyre Tue 06 Mar 2012 @ 00:12 Well where should I start! Firstly to Jamie Thankyou for being an insipration to so many people from so many different walks of life. <br /> Just wanted to to share a small experience that I was so lucky to be apart of, I volunteered to run a basic cooking group for some very young mums and one young dad, some of them had never had their parents teach them how to cook. The course went for 5 weeks in 2 hour sessions. The course bought the group together and friendships were made which was integrual to these young peoples lives they found themselves at each others homes cooking together and trying the recipes they learn't. I found the experience humbling and was often blown away with the feedback these young mums and dad gave about the course, even to the point that they requested to do a more advanced course next time. I did complete a more advanced group some months later and it was received just as well as the first, unfortunately there is no funding to continue with another course at this point in time. However, I know the participants have skills that they never thought they would have and I am the luckiest person in the world to have been part of thier lives, I just wanted to share this experience so that people can see that even small contributions can help a community to unite and eat healthy. Thanks again Jamie for inspiring me to get amongst it, keep up the good work and welcome to Australia.
3. Liz Le Masurier Tue 27 Sep 2011 @ 22:56 Go for it Australia! I met my husband at the Opera House in Sydney in 2006, so I feel a bit like a Sydneysider! I'm from Ireland and he's from Devon, we live near his 3 older kids in England now. In January 2007, Jason had a severe brain injury when I was pregnant with our son Jack, now four. He left hospital to move in with me 2 years later, and was told he'd never walk again. I was terrified when he moved home (in a wheelchair) at the idea of cooking for 6 every week, as I had no confidence at cooking, and we have his kids round twice a week or more. Fortunately, I'd picked up Ministry of Food at the dentist's book club the week before! I have been cooking your recipes literally every night since for Jason and the kids - Jack eats everything no other toddler will eat since he was two. Salads! Salmon tikka, chicken fahitas, fish pie, etc etc. Never saw a fish finger in his life! Thank you for saving me so much stress and making our lives such a pleasure - the recipes are so quick, they are handier than packet grub and the kids LOVE 'EM! Jason has now made a fulll physical recovery (confounding all the doctors) and is working again as a civil engineering lecturer. He's surfing again. I've passed the book on to loads of people. A wee tip - I made a list of my fave 20 recipes and page numbers on the back page to make it super quick to find the page. You're a hero...thank you for your part in our story. Love from Jason and Liz x x (Jason's using the book now too) PS Good luck with the four kids!
