method

• Preheat your oven to 190°C/375°F/gas 5
• Put your flour into a mixing bowl
• Using a coarse grater, grate your cold butter into the flour
• Add a pinch of salt and pepper
• Using your fingers, gently rub the butter into the flour until it begins to resemble breadcrumbs
• Add a splash of cold water to help bind it into a dough
• Divide the dough into 12 pieces and gently roll each into a round dumpling. The dumplings will suck up quite a bit of moisture so if your stew looks dry - add a cup of boiling water and give it a good stir
• Place the dumplings on top of your fully cooked stew and press down lightly so that they’re half submerged
• Cook in the oven or on the hob over a medium heat with the lid on for 30 minutes

These dumplings are fab! Even my mum ate them and she usually hates dumplings! I added a few herbs and paprika to mine just to spice them up a bit :)

3. by Izzy on Wed 05 Oct 2011 @ 10:19

I'm sorry, these dumplings were far to rich for me, im going to stick with good old fashioned suet :]

4. by Emma on Tue 07 Dec 2010 @ 16:50

This recipe is fantastic, and so easy! Suet is full of hydrogenated fat so this makes an excellent alternative and tastes great! :-)

Dare I admit, that I usually use those packet mixes of dumplings that you just add hot water to. However, half way through my casserole tonight I realized that mother hubbard's cupboard was bare!
I searched the internet and Jamie's recipe appeared. Thank you Jamie!
This recipe was a life saver - quick, easy and using store cupboard ingredients. I added some herbs too. The dumplings were a little bit more pastry-like than usual but still great.

I'm so impressed!

I've always loved dumplings, and now I can make them....this recipe could not be more simple. I added herbs and some cheddar, as suggested by some.....absolutely delicious!!

Thankyou

Great recipe. My 5 year old loved getting her hands in to mix it up and thought they tasted "better than excellent".

11. by sarah cheeseman on Sun 15 Feb 2009 @ 15:26

just made a sausage casserole and used your dumpling recipe instead of the old fashioned ones with suet, they tasted good although i added a few herbs in them aswell as s&p! Keep up the good work :)

The stew was good, but I wasn't very impressed with the dumplings. I think next time I'm going to hunt down some suet and make it the old fashioned way.

Hi Jamie
My husband made the beef stew along with the dumplings yesterday because we had the first snow of the season. It was true comfort food, and wonderfully warming. Thanks Jamie for giving us the inspiration.

Dearest Jamie,

I bought my lovely boyfriend Darren your book for Christmas and i haven't had to cook a meal since!!!!

He went through the cupboards to find out what we were missing from your list and he even invested £100.00 buying a magimix.

He stopped smoking Monday and finds thinking about what he needs to buy to prepare the evening meal a good distraction from the withdrawl symptoms.

Now i don't want you or your readers to think that i'm complaining because i know i've got it made (he even hoovers, irons and cleans the bathroom!!!!!) the only problem i'm having is that everything is so tasty i'm clearing my plate and i'm worried i'm going to be the size of a house!

We're moving to a new home next month and he's informed me he'd like a black gloss kitchen and a range to cook on!

He bought me black diamonds, I think he's a keeper.

Cheers
Megan x

Hello!
Me and my step-brother are making dinner tonight and he loves Jamie's recipes, so he looked up this website and now we're going to make those dumplings and add it to what we're making. By the way I also bought Jamie's Ministry of Food book for my dad, so I hope he likes it!

Hello :)

I'm going to attempt these dumplings tonight :s though being as I want to become a cook I need to have confidence! ;) I dont know if you actually read these emails but I just wanted to say that the recipes I have seen on your dvds are very simple but interesting at the same time. My nan is Italian and has given me new ideas for recipes and eventually I would like to start up my own buisness and promote these recipes. Would you have any tips for me please of how to go about this the best way?

Thanks :)
