German 'Strammer Max'

German 'Strammer Max'

Ingredients
For 1 serving you'll need:

1 large or 2 small slices of rye or mixed grain bread
3-4 thin slices of cured/smoked ham (Schwarzwälder ham tastes really good)
1 egg
Olive oil for frying the egg
Some butter for spreading (optional).
Salt and pepper to taste.
Pickled gherkins, tomato slices, onion slices for serving (optional )

Method
This snack can be found all over Germany (especially pubs and snack bars) and can be eaten at any time of the day. It's looks similar to the English 'Egg and Bacon' but has a very different taste, due to the cured/smoked ham that is used. Every region has its own version, some using cold ham slices, others using cubed ham that's been fried, but this is my favourite version. Most people serve it with pickled gherkins on the side but it's not a must.

You can either toast your bread or leave it just as it is and spread with a little butter. Place the ham slices on your bread/toast, top with a fried egg and serve. I've also seen it with cheese sprinkled on top, but i prefer it without.

Wenn es Schwarzbrot und roher Schinken gewürfelt wäre, wäre es perfekt. Dann könnte man ihn deutschen "Strammer Max" nennen

I had this at a "real" local pub in a German village. After we had a few beers, they brought it our for us. What a treat! Easy way to keep us drinking there.

It is a well-known nighttime snack.

I love you Jamie! and thanks for listing something which brings back warm memories. Happy I found it in a search engine.
