Lamb shepherds pie

Ingredients
500g lean Lamb mince meat
1 clove garlic chopped
olive oil
salt
pepper
1 cup of petit pois (frozen works)
1 large onion chopped
3 decent sized carrots, chopped
chopped mushrooms - to taste
1 decent sized sweet potato
4 decent sized white potatoes
basil - add according to your taste
2 tbl spoons gravy granules
lamb stock cube
splash worcester sauce
knob of butter
splash semi skimmed milk
handful breadcrumbs

Method
My first recipie post.... my favourite winter dish!

Cooking time - 40 minutes

Chop the potatos into chunks and rinse in cold water until water runs clear to remove startch, then put on the heat, once boiling, add salt and leave to boil until soft for about 30 minutes.

Pre heat oven to 190c / Gas mark 5
heat 1 - 2 tbl spoons olive oil gently in a pan and add in onions and garlic - fry off for 3-4 minutes until they start to brown
whilst doing this part boil the carrots (about 10 min)

Add the lamb mince to the onions and add salt and pepper. Crumble the lamb stock cube into the pan, add basil according to taste.

Fry off until lamb is browned and then add the peas and mushrooms. Drain off the carrots and add them. Add 2 tbl spoons gravy granules into the pan and a little water.
Add a good splash of worcester sauce - this is the key ingredient!
stir well and leave on a low light to cook, taste and add more seasoning if needed.

Drain the potatoes and add a knob of butter to the pan, add milk if you want to change the consistency and mash until smooth.

Place the lamb into an oven proof dish and place the mashed potato over the top, smooth over until lamb is covered - use a of a fork to decorate the mash.

Sprinkle with breadcrumbs

Bake in the oven for a further 10 minutes..

Serve with a good portion of broccoli or savoy cabbage in butter with a splash of worcester sauce to taste.

SOOOOOOOOOOO goood.. I will never touch pre-made shepards pie again, it always made me feel sick anyway, something so un-fresh about it. BUT THIS, shepherds pie is so delicious homemade! Great if you're just starting out homemade cooking :)

Tinkabella ( NOT JAMIE EVERYONE!!) - this recipe is great. Authentic taste without using a packet mix. I'm a rubbish cook and got stressed cooking this, vowing "never again" whilst it was in the oven. However, once I tasted it I realised it was worth the effort! It isn't a difficult recipe - I'm just really useless in the kitchen - so I'd urge anyone to give it a try. Thanks for posting this recipe Tinkabella.

Perhaps someone could suggest particular books/ websites/ recipes that are avail and suitable for children that may suit us. ....The Shepherds Pie sounds brill and Ii will try very soon.

Jamie - your recipe got me off the Naughty Step tonight. Don't know why I was on the step in the first place, but my 16 year old daughter and my wife ( and I!) totally loved it. We can't usually have shepherds pie as two sons, currently in Majorca, hate it, so this was our chance. So glad I found your recipe on the net. So simple and soooooooo tasty! We'll use it again and again!
Thank you very much! Tony. New Zealand. (Wiltshire).

I made this last week for someone who has rather plain taste in food, so I was struggling. It was superb, they even took home some of the remaining pie for tea the next day!

I used a desert spoonful of redcurrent jelly in the mince as suggested by Danielle, great idea. I also added some red wine too.

Going to make it for Sunday lunch tomorrow and this time will also use grated cheese and breadcrumbs on the mash and also the cream and black pepper. I may even add some pancetta to the mince too?
Thanks to Tinkabella for this recipe and everyone's elses suggestions!

23. by alex on Sat 08 May 2010 @ 05:11

the recipe sounds delicious but it's NOT of of Jamie's; the name of the author is at the top with the recipe - unless Jamie's using a new pseudonym.

24. by Becky Birch on Thu 29 Apr 2010 @ 16:36

Definitely the best shepherd's pie we've ever had. I substituted worcester sauce for Mushroom ketchup. Delicious!

25. by Yvonne on Sun 25 Apr 2010 @ 18:26

hey there, i love your recipes! this is the first time i have written a comment.. i only got as far as shopping for the ingredients for this one.. seems it is quite hard to find 'lamb stock' in australian supermarkets.. i tried a few deli's too... Someone has told me of a british specialts butchers that may stock it, so next time i may try there.. have gone for a beef pie instead for tonights dinner :)

29. by Danielle on Fri 12 Feb 2010 @ 11:09

Try adding a little redcurrant jelly to the lamb; it really livens things up!

like Kellbell comment above using left over roast leg of lamb with a cumin and coriander crust, the additional
flavours should help the depth and body. Cross your fingers! When are you coming out west again?

32. by Ant Masters on Wed 06 Jan 2010 @ 21:47

Cushdy Mons Oliver! Cheers for the inspiration!
I made this pie with new pots and used HP sauce instead of worcestershire sauce and it rocked!! Hmmmmm! This fed three hungry blokes and we all were satisfied afterwards!! With the gavey try adding a little mint sauce, it really compliments the lamb in the pie - just beautiful!!!!

Cheers Jamie!

33. by Darran on Wed 09 Dec 2009 @ 15:16

38. by Nim on Wed 26 Aug 2009 @ 12:41

I am a really bad cook so excuse me for asking a silly question. With the gravy granules do i need to dissolve them before adding to the mixure?

39. by Roisin on Tue 07 Jul 2009 @ 14:01

Jamie is the best for warm winter foods. I loved the pie, so tasty, easy to do & best of all my 3 year old couldnt get enough of it.

40. by Anne on Fri 03 Jul 2009 @ 09:54

This is the best shepherds pie recipe I've made. I did it with beef mince. The worcester sauce and gravy granules are a must. I put in lots of mushrooms and lots of peas. I also added a sprinkling of parmesan cheese to the breadcrumb topping.
Thanks Jamie
