Mashed potatoes with beef sauce

Ingredients
250 g beef
1 onion
butter
salt
pepper
paprika
water
browning
mashed potatoes

Method
Heat the oven to 200 degrees celsius.

Fry the onions in a pot and put some paprika in there. Also put the meat, salt and pepper in it. When the meat is brown, put some water and browning in the pot and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. If the sauce is not thick enough, make a thickening from water and flour and let it boil a little bit again. You can also put some ketchup in there.

Put some butter in an ovenproof dish and pour the sauce in there. Put the mashed potatoes on top of it. If you'd like, you can also sprinkle some breadcrumbs over it. Put it in the oven until the mashed potatoes are golden.

I want to ask the same question as Damo did, what is browning? Is that sauce or coloring thing? thank you.
