My mother told me that I had to use my green tomatoes in my tunnel house (first time growing tomatoes and they went abit wild). She said to either make Green Tomatoe Chutney or Raspberry Jam with them and as they were odd tomatoes (orange and very fleshy) I thought Chutney would be the way to go (plus my son loves relish etc on his bread). I was going to use mum's recipe but found this and thought we'd give it ago. I involved Logan (nearly 12) and got the ingredients and away we went. I only put 1l of vinegar in and added some red capsican for colour. It is simmering at the moment and smells delicious.
I have never attempted chutney or jam before, but I decided that this looked easy. I used the above amounts, but only 220g sugar and added a chopped large fresh chilli, and it tastes brilliant. (I did have to reduce it down just a little more than the suggested simmer time).
I was given a kilo of small green toms and after reading a few recipes decidedly to go with this one and glad I did, it's gorgeous! My only addition was a tablespoon of Encona chilli sauce which was perfect. Goes well with cheese and crackers and ham sandwiches. Thanks Jamie.
how/ long can this bekept ?does it need to be canned?
Made this today in a single batch of 3 x 600g tomatoes so thought about using 3 x each ingredient but decided not to. Did not use as much sugar but still turned out a little too sweet for my liking. I shall now bottle it all up and put them away for a couple of months to see what happens!
Made green tomato chutney with this recipe first time i have ever made chutney, it tasted lovely the only thing i added was a teaspoon of mustard ,all my family loved it.
For anyone who has kids/people who don't like any dried fruit in their chutneys I blitz them first before cooking with a little of the tomatoe juice in a small blender, that way you still get the nice sweet fruity flavour from them and I think it helps to get a nice sticky set.
Hi, I would love to make this chutney but my daughter dislikes sultanas , currants etc; is there any other dried fruit we can use?

Thanks.
I have made my Mum's ancient Green Tomato Chutney recipe for years and tweeked it a little each time with different spices etc. I believe the main problem you get if you need to strain it is that when chopping, or mincing, or whizzing in food processor, you need to strain off a lot of the juice that comes from the tomatoes and keep the pulp. Don't get too worried about, you obviouly need the juice, but not buckets of it as it does make a lot!
Have fun making chutney. It is wonderful and the best bit is it gets better the longer you have it, so make lots :)
I made it today - the first chutney I've ever made, and only made it 'cos my tomatoes didn't turn red this year :( But it's great, nice and spicy. Perhaps a little less vinegar next time as I've had to strain the mixture before putting it in jars, and other recipes I've seen on the internet seem to use the same amount of vinegar but twice as many tomatoes. So easy to make!
