Onion Bhajis

Added by hoppershaun | Mon 23 Feb 2009 @ 08:24

Onion Bhajis

Ingredients
SERVES 2

1 medium onion, halved and sliced

100g plain flour

1 tsp baking powder

2 tsp chilli powder

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground turmeric

pinch of salt

vegetable oil, for deep frying

Method
1. Mix the flour, spices and salt in a bowl. Gradually mix in enough water to make a quite thick, sticky batter. Add the onions and mix well.
2. Heat the oil to 180C. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop in a little of the batter. It should start sizzling immediately, but not too much.
3. Form the batter into 6 balls. Deep fry for 2 minutes, turning halfway through. Drain on kitchen roll and serve.

I didn't have any Plain Flour, Chickpea Flour or Gram Flour so I used Corn Flour. My partner said they tasted fine.

Great recipe, I subbed some of the water for a beaten egg and this bound them together very nicely. Yum !

This is the first time i have tried this recipe. I made a larger mix up to make many and spiced it up abit more. I used sparkling spring water for the batter and they have come out a real treat!

Everything fell apart in the pan and ended up mushy and grease soaked - awful recipe.

I'm sure these are delicious onion firtters but traditional Onion Bhajis are made with chick pea flour, not wheat flour. Very different result. Indian restaurants in the UK use Chick Pea flour (Besan). It gives them a distinctly different taste from wheat. it is also important to have long thin pieces of sliced onion for a 'shaggy' looking result. I just made a batch and they are yummy. Recipe imilar to above just different flour.

Chick pea flour is called "besan" and not only gluten-free, but easilly available everywhere.

A great recipe as i'm allergic to gram flour. Might not be the traditional way but they are still amazing

The whole point is if you want to make them on a whim & have no time to go to the shops, you might not have psecial flour in the cupboard.

fantastic and simple - just what I was looking for - I can't get a hold of chick pea flour and rice flour around here - thanks

i found this helpful as it was a last minute decision to make some bhaji's and i only have plain flour in the cupboard.

Shame this recipe deviates from an original recipe and use plain flour. Normally would be done with gram/chick pea flour and therefore will be gluten free. It's not hard to get!

i found a recipe that used rice flour and chick pea flour.

I didn't have baking powder and used bicarbonate of soda. They were very good light and fluffy.
I also cooked them twice.

shouldn't we be using a psecial flour rather than plain flour????
