• Preheat your oven to 190°C/375°F/gas 5
• Put your flour into a mixing bowl
• Using a coarse grater, grate your cold butter into the flour
• Add a pinch of salt and pepper
• Using your fingers, gently rub the butter into the flour until it begins to resemble breadcrumbs
• Add a splash of cold water to help bind it into a dough
• Divide the dough into 12 pieces and gently roll each into a round dumpling. The dumplings will suck up quite a bit of moisture so if your stew looks dry - add a cup of boiling water and give it a good stir
• Place the dumplings on top of your fully cooked stew and press down lightly so that they’re half submerged
• Cook in the oven or on the hob over a medium heat with the lid on for 30 minutes

2. Wannarama Wed 29 Apr 2009 @ 18:31 Dare I admit, that I usually use those packet mixes of dumplings that you just add hot water to. However, half way through my casserole tonight I realised that mother hubbard's cupboard was bare!
I searched the internet and Jamie's recipe appeared. Thank you Jamie!
This recipe was a life saver - quick, easy and using store cupboard ingredients. I added some herbs too. The dumplings were a little bit more pastry-like than usual but still great.

The stew was good, but I wasn't very impressed with the dumplings. I think next time I'm going to hunt down some suet and make it the old fashioned way.

i am going to attempt to cook the beef and ale stew with dumplings.
i am 20 and the microwave is my life so hopefully all goes well and i dont burn the kitchen down. fingers crossed!! lol
and if things do go well i will be cooking freshly from scratch everyday,bye bye microwave food!!! :)

I bought my lovely boyfriend Darren your book for Christmas and i haven't had to cook a meal since!!!!

He went through the cupboards to find out what we were missing from your list and he even invested £100.00 buying a magimix.

He stopped smoking Monday and finds thinking about what he needs to buy to prepare the evening meal a good distraction from the withdrawl symptoms.

Now i don't want you or your readers to think that i'm complaining because i know i've got it made (he even hoovers, irons and cleans the bathroom!!!!!) the only problem i'm having is that everything is so tasty i'm clearing my plate and i'm worried i'm going to be the size of a house!

We're moving to a new home next month and he's informed me he'd like a black gloss kitchen and a range to cook on!

He bought me black diamonds, I think he's a keeper.

I'm going to attempt these dumplings tonight :s though being as I want to become a cook I need to have confidence! ;) I dont know if you actually read these emails but I just wanted to say that the recipes I have seen on your dvds are very simple but interesting at the same time. My nan is Italian and has given me new ideas for recipes and eventually I would like to start up my own buisness and promote these recipes. Would you have any tips for me please of how to go about this the best way?
