The Big Feastival takes place on Alex James’s idyllic Cotswold farm and what better way to celebrate our lovely location than with our very own ‘field to fork’ story?
We don’t just want to champion home-grown talent at the festival, with the likes of Stornoway and Duke on the Main Stage and Emily Watkins and James Graham cooking in The Big Kitchen, we also want all of our festival-goers to enjoy the delights of home-grown food.
In April this year, we got together with The Royal Agricultural University to design our first ever festival allotment and with the help of local school children, we’ve planted potatoes, garlic, onions and herbs which will all (fingers crossed) be ready in time for this year’s Big Feastival.
Over the festival weekend, we’ll be encouraging festival-goers of all ages to visit The Potato Patch where the team from The Royal Agricultural University will be on hand to teach them all about growing their own vegetables and help them to dig up potatoes and pick their own herbs.
Armed with their own freshly dug up potatoes and accompaniments, food fans can then prep and cook their own home-grown delights under the expert guidance of Jamie’s Kitchen Garden Project and Potato Council.
THE ROYAL AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY
We are delighted to be working with a team from the The Royal Agricultural University to create this year’s inaugural Potato Patch. Established in 1845, the University in Cirencester is recognised nationally and internationally as a leader in the delivery of education, research and consultancy in agriculture and the rural environment.
THE RAU ENTREPRENEURS
The Royal Agricultural University Entrepreneurs is a student society created by students, for students, to develop their business skills through hands-on experience. The society has proved a hotbed for fresh thinking, innovative products and sustainable produce. A selection of RAU Entrepreneurs will be showcasing their work at The Big Feastival and festival-goers can visit their tent to sip, sample and shop some of the student’s latest creations.
JAMIE’S KITCHEN GARDEN PROJECT
Jamie’s Kitchen Garden Project are cooking up an exciting, hands-on food education programme for primary school children across the UK, enabling primary schools to bring food knowledge and cooking skills to life. Jamie’s core team will be next to our Potato Patch all weekend, running a fun programme of classes throughout the festival where kids of all ages can cook freshly picked produce from scratch. The Kitchen Garden Project has also teamed up with Jamie’s Wood Fired Ovens to get kids preparing their very own potatoes from the Potato Patch allowing kids to see the journey of their food from the ground to plate up close.
Potato Council have sourced Red Tractor assured seeds for our allotment project and will also be on hand over the three days, running activities for all the family. Pop on to Potato Council’s stand and try their potato samples and learn about the nutritional benefits of potatoes. There are also plenty of colouring sheets for kids, as well as recipe leaflets to take home to try for yourself and you can also meet their mascot ‘Potato Pete’.
