After the school dinners project, Jamie needed a break. Italy is the place he loves the most, and for ages he wanted to travel around the country to get inspired again by the food and the people. So Jamie set off with a VW camper van and a specially built trailer kitchen on the back of it so he could cook wherever he pitched up.
Jamie had a great time exploring the delights of the busy night markets in Palermo, entering pasta-making competitions with the mammas in the small mountain community in Le Marche and injecting some enthusiasm into cooking for the Benedictine community north of Rome.
While the TV show, titled Jamie’s Great Italian Escape, follows his trip, experiences and some of the wonderful people he met along the way, the book is simply a tribute to the food and the land that has always inspired Jamie.
It contains more than 120 recipes and is, quite simply, the book that he has always wanted to write.
