As soon as I walked into the Jamie Oliver Big Rig, I was enlightened by the wonderful smells and extreme brightness of the truck. I was immediately handed an apron and directed to the sink to wash my hands to get things started.

The Food Champions were so excited and happy, which only made it more fun for me to cook. I really enjoyed the good vibes and beautiful smiles that stretched from the stoves all the way to the exit doors. We started off our class by learning about the importance of fruits and vegetables and the significance this has on your body. The broccoli that we cooked that day had come straight from the garden at our school, Sac High. It was AMAZING.

Chef Matt went on to teach us healthy ways to prepare our own foods. That was the most exciting part. I watched one of my classmates taste broccoli for the first time. She had her doubts and was very hesitant at first, but the group in the truck made her feel welcome and comfortable. She loved it! As someone who loves broccoli, it warmed my heart to see other people begin to love it as well. The Food Champions were also helpful in guiding the class to learn new ways to use old flavors; I learned that honey is a healthy, natural way to add sweetness to any dish. The overall experience was amazing, and I really enjoyed the feeling of goodwill, and the sense that we are all in this together.

I involved myself with "Edible Sac High," the food education program at my high school, two years ago. This is where I first learned about new fruits and vegetables, and was exposed to innovative ways of cooking. The Jamie Oliver Food Foundation Big Rig really helped bring a lot of what I learned in this program full circle; I learned things like where healthy foods come from and how they should be cooked, as well as the importance of what we put in our bodies.
I have always had a passion for cooking and trying new things, but in the last few years I have been able to learn a lot about gardening and cooking through a much healthier lens.

I do not have any of the original recipes from the Big Rig, but I would love to eventually be able to make some of my own creations, taking into account good, healthy foods combined with healthier preparation. I think these skills will help me to live the best life that I can.
