Jamie's Italian Celebrates Food Revolution DayWed 05 Jun 2013
Story by Food Revolution Day Team
From Glasgow to Portsmouth, Cardiff to Norwich and across all 32 Jamie’s Italian restaurants, schoolchildren around Britain had a Food Revolution Day lesson they won’t forget!
Local pupils in each city were chosen to take part in a special school visit on May 17th as Jamie’s Italian restaurants got into fully into the swing of Food Revolution Day. The children took part in interactive, educational and fun activities and one student told us “this is exactly how I imagined it, this is the best day!”
What’s not to love? Kids got really stuck in – not only kneading dough, making bread and pasta but also learning about healthy food choices and tasting some unusual fruit and veg for the first time. The Jamie’s Italian teams have had great comments from their Food Revolution Day events, with parents, teachers and children already looking forward to Food Revolution Day 2014!
Here is just some of the feedback:
One teacher from Bankhead Primary School in Glasgow was really impressed by how the morning went: “The staff were friendly, cheerful and enthusiastic throughout our visit and really engaged the children. After our visit the children were able to recall key learning points and expand on their current knowledge of eating healthily.”
Manchester’s Saddleworth School students learned about using great ingredients, seasonality, sustainability and food education by sharing food knowledge and passion. They were curious about life working in a restaurant and wanted to know what it’s like to work for Jamie. They loved the meal they helped to make themselves – Panzanella and Pasta – and they were all inspired to take their recipes home and get cooking!
Children visiting Jamie’s Italian in Birmingham learned how to make bread from scratch. While their bread was sent off to the kitchen to prove and bake, they got a taste of mooli, baby aubergine, gooseberries, golden carrots and candy beetroot. On the lunch menu ……the warm bread the students had baked and the vegetables they’d learned about in the morning – an edible lesson plan we love!
Kids from the Place Farm Academy School in Cambridge made fresh pasta and focaccia and also had a guess at identifying vegetables from a box of ‘weird and wacky’ veg. The students heard about getting into the hospitality industry and how to become a chef. Kieran, the winner of the pasta making contest, told the crowd he planned on growing up to be like Jamie – a chef in the making!
On her way to the races (quite literally!) the Lady Mayoress of York had a chat with 49 students from Mounty School, Minster School and St. Paul’s School about Food Revolution Day. After making pasta and bread, the students got creative and designed a colourful banner to mark the day.
Children from the Priory Rise School in Milton Keynes said their trip to Jamie’s Italian in Milton Keynes was the “best trip ever” and are already asking for an invitation back in 2014!
Meanwhile, at the Food Revolution Day Street Party at Westland Place, the Jamie’s Italian team went the whole hog. Their stall was the last one standing, having gone through four of Jimmy Docherty’s fantastic roast pigs served in Flour Station ciabatta rolls with salsa verde or cider-fuelled apple sauce. Despite the chilly weather, the queues were long all day, and Jamie himself got the very last pork roll to tuck into on his journey home after a long day hosting the street party!
The Food Revolution Day Team sends a massive thank you to all the Jamie’s Italian staff that worked hard (and played hard too – check out Jamie’s Liverpool staff rocking their hula hoops!) to bring the world of fresh food to life for schoolchildren across the county.
