Eat like a local in Bristol

Bristol marches to the beat of its own drum, with a vibrant mix of creativity and craft best seen though its art, music, festivals and food. The latter has exploded in recent years, with abundant new offerings popping up across the city. Wapping Wharf’s shipping-container restaurant hub, Cargo, opened at the end of last year (with Cargo 2 following suit a few months later), while Cotham Hill’s growing neighbourhood dining scene and Stokes Croft’s expanding café belt ensure that you’re never far away from a well-made plate of food. Hart’s bakery
Set in the Victorian arches outside Temple Meads Station, this bakery is well worth arriving by train for. Pick up sweet and savoury flaky pastries, cinnamon buns and Hart’s signature sourdough –all of which are handmade daily.
Small St Espresso
An ever-changing roster of guest blends keeps things as fresh as the baby-blue La Marzocco coffee machine at Small St. The café specialises in artisan producers (look out for local fave Clifton Coffee), and there’s a sister site, Little Victories, over at Wapping Wharf.

Bakers and Co.
Take in the UK’s longest stretch of independent shops, then treat yourself to a wedge of homemade banana bread and a banging bloody mary at this top Gloucester Road brunch spot.
Katie & Kim’s Kitchen
Rub shoulders with the Montpelier locals on communal tables at this award-winning breakfast haunt. Toasted cheese and rosemary scones topped with bacon and poached eggs are a firm favourite.

Workhouse Kitchen
Owner Chris Welch grows many of the ingredients for the dishes at his café, which champions vegan and vegetarian food. If that’s not your bag, there’s the option to add fish or organic meat to beef up your greens.
Chicken Shed
Head to the renovated cargo containers with views across Bristol’s Floating Harbour, for staples such as chicken kiev with curried cauliflower, and spicy wings.
Paco Tapas
A taste of Andalucía – ham croquetas, manchego, and Galician beef (with sherry pairings to match) – from the team behind local Michelin-starred restaurant Casa Mia.

Pasta Loco
Expect welcoming service and impressive twists on classic pasta dishes – their pancetta-wrapped poached egg carbonara here is a standout.
Housed in a shipping container, this pint-sized fine diner has only 14 covers, so book ahead. The modern British menu changes regularly and showcases local produce, including English ricotta and goat’s cheese.


Bar Buvette
The laid-back continental vibe flows as easily as the natural, organic wines, while the awesome charcuterie will help you stay a little longer.
Small Bar
With wooden-clad walls and a proper pub vibe, there’s bags of character on tap here – plus 31 beers from the South West and a worldwide selection of craft options.

Brooks Guesthouse
Choose either a classically designed room or one of the four rooftop Airstreams overlooking St Nicholas market for a smart, central address.
