method

As a chef I always feel I shouldn't be eating something like a fish finger buttie – but you know what, I think that makes it taste even better. Here's what I do...

I remove about 4 fish fingers from the freezer and grill them on each side until crispy and golden. While that's happening, I butter 2 bits of nice soft white bread or a white roll, smearing one half generously with tomato ketchup. When the fish fingers are done, I remove them from the grill and place them on the bread smeared with ketchup. The most important bit is to put the other bit of bread on top and, using a little force, push down on your buttie which, for some reason, seems to make it taste even better. And that's it – all done.

I tend to eat one of these while I'm walking about at home and I always get told off by the missus for dropping bits everywhere. You'll notice from the picture that I've put a handful of rocket in the sandwich, which isn't really necessary but it does make it look a bit more posh. I was a bit embarrassed to tell the photographer he had to shoot a fish finger sandwich, so I told him it was 'lemon sole goujons' – what a prat I am! Be proud to eat fish fingers, that's what I say.

@james :<br /> If you happen to see this, the OED informs me that rocket is the British spelling, not roquette, which is the french spelling but sometimes also used in Britain.

I am 50 yrs old and have never outgrown fish finger sandwiches or fried tomato sandwiches, sometimes the simple things in life are the best

3. by nym on Sun 26 Jun 2011 @ 19:49

Fishfinger sandwiches are awesome with redcurrant jelly instead of ketchup. Sounds wierd but it works really well.

4. by james on Fri 13 May 2011 @ 16:23

It's roquette (French) or arugula (English), not rocket (NASA).

I love Fish Finger Sandwiches (must be toasted).
Three grilled Fish Fingers per Sandwich.
Two Slices of hot buttered toast.
Ketchup on one slice & Mayo on the other.
Three Fingers slightly crushed on toast fits just right.
Black pepper.
Eat up , very yummy.

6. by Andrea on Mon 14 Sep 2009 @ 22:21

The entire family loves fish fingers. Especially the feline family members who are not supposed to eat them...

This is one of the rare occasions, where my boyfriend actually cooks. Last time he got adventurous, put some cheese on top of the fish fingers and put this under the grill. Nice!

Can anyone help us ozzies out.We used to have a 5* restaurant (kinda similar to a brit greasy cafe) here that used to do wicked toast but they lost the recipe and we cant find it anywhere on the internet.we`re tryning but the skewers mess the bread up and the barbie burns the crust before the middle`s done.

Hi Jamie, We TiVo your show "Jamie at Home" and have loved every recipe we have tried (also, your cookbook recipes are always a hit). Unfortunately, we deleted an episode of your show that had shimp skewered and grilled for a short time, then finished off in a "throwaway" pan, with red bell peppers and other stuff. Can we possibly get that recipe from you? Or anyone else who may have it?

Also, we noticed no new episodes in the future. When are you coming back? We miss you!!

58. by Penny on Mon 08 Sep 2008 @ 20:54

Hi Jamie: I recently caught the last bit of a recipe on Food TV. The base looked like green beans and other julienned veggies with a vinagrette dressing, topped with scallops wrapped in bacon and pinned with rosemary stalks. Hope you can help me to find this recipe.

Love your food. Love your cookbooks. Love your shows. Thanks for all the great nosh!

59. by Christina on Sun 07 Sep 2008 @ 14:33

Hello Jamie, or anyone else, i am looking for a recipie with oily fish and either potatoes, rice or pasta.

Any ideas?

60. by Anty on Fri 05 Sep 2008 @ 21:39

If you change the tomato ketchup with tartar sauce and add some gherkins, it would be like filet O Fish at Mc Donald :-)

61. by davepop on Fri 05 Sep 2008 @ 11:30

Nice with sliced radish as well.
From the garden of course.
