The ultimate guide to toast

May 16, 2019 • In Vegetable, Vegetarian

Who doesn’t love toast? Whether it’s sweet or savoury, there is always something in the Food Team cupboard to top a slice of warm toast.

MIX UP YOUR TOAST TOPPERS

Toast makes the ultimate breakfast, lunch or afternoon snack, so it’s nice to try something different once in a while. Changing the bread you use is a great place to start; try using rye bread for a super-savoury option. Or, for something more substantial, keep sourdough in the freezer to whip out for a toast emergency. Read on for more of our favourite toast twists...

AVOCADO ON RYE

Avocado on toast is a classic and there is lots of inspiration for toppings in Super Food Family Classics. One of our favourites from the book is the puréed avocado with charred corn on the cob and a drizzle of hot chilli sauce, but there are loads more ideas here.

For breakfast, a perfectly poached egg is hard to beat. The toast soaks up the deliciously runny yolk and there should always be a crust spare to wipe the plate clean at the end.

Soup and toast go hand in hand. Take a bouillabaisse, a French fish soup that is decadently served with croutons topped with rouille – a garlicky saffron mayonnaise. Utter bliss! Fresh basil pesto spread on crusty toast is always going to be a winner with minestrone. And you can’t beat an oozy piece of cheese on toast with onion soup.

NUT BUTTER

Come 4pm when we all get those tummy rumbles, a hot cup of tea and a slice of toast slathered with raspberry jam is a surefire crowd-pleaser. But why not try mixing it up with a mashed banana topped with a spoonful of tahini and some halved blueberries, or some almond butter and a drizzle of honey?

Nut butters are a firm favourite in Jamie’s Food Team. Nuts are generally packed with a variety of essential vitamins and minerals, and are a source of unsaturated fat (good for keeping our cholesterol happy), so nut butters are a brilliant and delicious way to get some extra nutrition into our diets.

There are endless ways to jazz up a slice of toast, and these suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg. If you really fancy taking things to the next level, try making your own loaf – check out Jamie’s easy recipe video here.
