6 super nutritious and comforting soups to fight the cold

January 21, 2016 • In Soup, Healthy, Winter

After an indulgent and expensive festive season, there’s no better time to knock up a warming bowl of tasty, nutritious soup that’s easy on the pocket, too.

Whiz up your concoctions in batches and take it to work for lunch, or pop the leftovers in the freezer for fuss-free dinners on lazy nights. These soups are a great way of using up odds and ends left in the fridge, too.

This hearty soup is made up of basic veg and simple, store cupboard staples. Not only is it packed with nutrients, the lentils are high in fibre and a great source of protein. Purée the soup or leave it chunky, depending on what you fancy, then serve up with a slice of wholemeal bread.

Full of mighty flavour, this super satisfying sweetcorn & mussel chowder is a real winner. With bombs of flavour from the sweetcorn, mussels and salty bacon, and finished with a dash of cream, this gorgeous chowder can be whipped up in just 30 minutes for a great mid-week supper.

Packed with nutrients, this warming chicken and mushroom broth uses mixed wild rice instead of regular rice and potassium-rich ginger to really up the stakes. It’s a real bowl of goodness with an exotic twist.

Created by our Food Tube friends the Chiappa sisters, this comforting soup is great for using up any leftover veg you’ve got hanging around (the sisters use leeks, courgettes and peas, but you can mix it up depending on what you’ve got in the veg drawer). Crank it up a notch by making your own stock with the chicken carcass.

This is a mega-easy soup that you can whip up in no time at all. Bursting with vitamin C-rich broccoli, this gorgeous green bowl is perfect for giving you – and your immune system – a boost when you’re feeling under the weather.

This rustic Italian classic is cheap as chips and all the chunky veg makes it super-filling, too. It’s a great way to fuel up on a cold winter night and is even better reheated the next day, when the flavours have had time to intensify.

Turn to these trusted soup recipes time after time and you’ll be bouncing through the winter months, guaranteed!
