Summer recipes for Wimbledon

June 23, 2023 • In British, Summer, Baking, Fruit

Beautiful British summer recipes are all about fresh flavours, vibrant colours and a little touch of sparkle.

Strawberries, scones and summery cocktails are a must at any Wimbledon-inspired feast. Whether you’re packing up a picnic or hosting a get-together at home, stick on the tennis and enjoy our favourite Wimbledon recipes to celebrate the Great British summer – umbrellas at the ready!

What food is traditionally eaten at Wimbledon?

Strawberries, scones, sandwiches and Pimm’s are just some of the classic refreshments on offer at Wimbledon; and if you're feeling flush, go for a slap-up Champagne and fish & chips spread, for a proper Wimbledon celebration. For something a bit more low-key, simply pack up a picnic and find a spot on Murray Mound – we’ve got all the recipes you need.

Recipes to serve at a Wimbledon party

Heroing British classics Jersey Royals and Mrs Kirkam’s Lancashire cheese, Jamie’s homage to the King’s Coronation quiche will be the king of the picnic. Easy to make ahead and transport, it’s the perfect savoury centrepiece for your Wimbledon party spread!

You can’t have a picnic without Scotch eggs (them’s the rules) and these mini mouthfuls are an absolute delight. Golden and crisp on the outside, with that all-important runny yolk, they’re delicious served with crunchy radishes and a dollop of piccalilli.

Forget cucumber sandwiches, a chilled cucumber soup is the queen of sophisticated summer recipes. Pack it up in a flask for a fully portable starter to your Wimbledon picnic.

Golden fried fish, minty mushy peas and a quick tartare sauce combine into these cute little fish baps – you can’t get more British than that! Make the sides ahead, and then cook the fish to order, if you’re feeding a crowd.

If it’s simple sophistication you’re after, these smoked salmon bites are the way to go. Lemony crème fraîche, punchy horseradish and smoked salmon is such a winning flavour combo, and pairs perfectly with a cold glass of fizz.

These mini pastries are brilliant to pack in a picnic. Get the kids involved and top them with whatever veg you have to hand, then keep in the fridge for when you’re ready to enjoy. We use ready-made puff pastry for extra ease.

Push the boat out and make Jamie’s royal recipe, created for baby Archie. Jamie says: “I love a good classic English dessert and this one ticks all the boxes for a right royal knees-up! Bursting with fresh strawberries and cream, and laced with elderflower, lemon and vanilla, it’s a thing of beauty and an absolute joy to eat.”

You can’t beat a Victoria sandwich – it’s simple but elegant, and is a proper Wimbledon recipe that’ll make the crowd go wild! Packed with strawberries and freshly whipped cream, you won’t be able to resist going in for round two.

Make the most of July’s seasonal fruits and dive right into our summer pavlova. Baking your own meringue is easier than you might think and is really worth the extra effort. Topped with Pimm’s-soaked raspberries, zingy lemon curd and pops of fresh mint, this is a winning summer pud.

If there was ever a time to recreate this classic British dessert, Wimbledon is the perfect excuse! Jamie’s given it a Wimbledon feel with strawberries and cream, Pimm’s, ginger beer and cucumber – which is an absolute game-changer! You got to try it.

This super-simple and delicious slushie is a kid-friendly drink for Wimbledon season. Without the added sugar and junk of a shop-bought fizzy drink, it’s a treat without all the nasties – great for sipping court-side.

Inspired by the Pimm’s No1 Cup, this booze-free version of the British summer staple. It’s cool, crisp and bursting with juicy fruit. Serve it over lots of ice, so it’s super-cold.
