I don't know about other things, but if you want to keep chickens get an Eglu. They're fox-proof and pretty cheap. My boyfriend's got chicken and ducks in the orchard and they keep getting eaten, which isn't a pretty sight.
EDIT: Here's the website for Eglus: www.eglu.com Fairly straightforward.

You might want to check with your local council; some have rules about what you are and are not allowed to keep.

With chickens (in the UK at least) it's really only noise regulations you need to worry about. If you own your house then you can keep hens (not roosters for obvious reasons) in your garden. If you're renting, however, you'll need to check your contract.
I hear Jonathan Ross keeps sheep in his garden in North London.

How about rabbits - ideal for the small garden?
(I am assuming you are not thinking about cats & dogs

I have to agree with Anna ... check the contract and see if youre allowed to have pets.
I have to say chickens and rabbits might be the best to have in a city house. They will need good space etc ...
