A challenge for you..should you wish to take it

Hi all,
I thought I would post a little culinary challenge for you all.As we all know when Jamie did the "School Dinners" program to make healthy meals for the kids he was expected to work within a very tight budget.
Now here is the challenge for you all..ready???
The challenge is this so put on your culinary thinking caps:

1.you have to create a meal for one person for $5.00 u.s.(remember I said this would be a challenge)
2.you must keep track of what you would spend to make your meal(remember you only have $5.00 u.s. so keep a close eye on your numbers)
3.list what ingredients you bought and  how much each cost
4.what did you call your dish
5.and how long did it take to prep your meal and what was the taste

Good luck everyone I can't wait to see your responses

one person, I can make a meal for four people!

$5:00=£2.50

bag of Potatoes for £0.50.

2:00 worth of fish.

Each person would only get a small amount of fish, but the chips should fill them up.

Hi french_vanilla,
the challenge is for one course meal I don't know if that helps or hinders what you may have thought.
I can't wait to see your response

Doesn't seem much of a challenge!

i generally spend less than that per head anyway smile

2 TbspOlive oil                    - 9P
1 Tbsp Butter              - 9P

Total                         - £1.03

Dessert
1/4 lb rhubarb          - free (homegrown)
1/2 oz fresh ginger   - 10P
2 oz palm sugar        - 10P
1/4oz agar-agar           - 1P
4 fl oz Greek yoghurt - 18P
1 tbsp honey             - 8P

Total                          - 47P

Grand total                 - £2.08

Plus 1 glass red wine  - 40P (I import my own from France smile )

Total inc drink            - £2.48

Or for the USAns       - $4.98

Not too difficult, but then again, I wasn't really trying to keep the price down.

We generally only have 2 courses rather than 3, and the 2nd course course is usually fruit. Alternatively, we start with home-made dip and crudites, or home-made soup instead of salad. Always include plenty of fruit and veg.

Our weekly food bill averages around £50 for 2 people, (including everything except alcoholic drinks). It varies considerably, since I buy meat & dry goods in bulk at farmshops and asian markets. Some weeks all I buy is fruit and veg.

If I was really trying, I could make it much cheaper - but no need to be stingy these days smile
