Caramelized Onions


Some weeks ago there was a topic about caramelized onions. Unfortunatly I wasn't able to find it again. But I decided to try out this yummy thing. So I just want to know if I got that right:

Put a bunch of sliced onions into a pan with little sugar and no oil and leave them there on low heat for several hours till they are brown and caramelized. I hope u can help me cause I really wanna try them.

How To Caramelize Onions

Slice onions into 1/4-inch wide rings.
Heat butter or combination of butter and oil in heavy skillet.
Add onions and a small amount of sugar (optional) and slowly cook over medium heat.
Cook until onions are caramel colored, stirring often, 30 to 40 minutes.
For more flavor, add a touch of vinegar at the end of cooking, stirring to deglaze the pan.
