Crème fraîche

I don't know if this is the right place for the post but here goes:

1- Is crème fraîche the same thing as double cream? I ask because, as a good, bilingual French Canadian, I noticed that the container of double cream at the grocery store was marked "crème fraîche" on the French side of the container. I have never seen crème fraîche in any grocery store in my hometown (population 160 000) and it's not like I live in the boondocks...

2- If crème fraîche is not available, what is the best substitute? Sour cream, plain yogurt, double cream (refer to question 1)?

Any help in this matter would be appreciated. help
