Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?
Its heavy drizzle here , not true welsh rain just those fine drops falling heavily at the moment so I am just looking at the garden out of the window and thinking about the green tomatoes that are still growing and failing to ripen .
Chutney time !

Putting a thick layer on top of the soil to keep the soil moist & help to control weeds..
Im using finely chopped trees that I buy from a local tree lopper/ landscaper.

I must mulch too Frizz!
The one thing I managed to do lately was grow some cherry tomato seeds a friend gave me. As I was potting them up yesterday I realised that I had some self sown seedlings coming up in perfectly good places, bigger and stronger than the ones I have been nurturing!
O I also have double red poppies coming up, can't wait til they flower! ![]()

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?
I have just finished a lovely time of picking gardenias each day.
It is lovely that they bloom over Christmas here.
The whole house has been scented with them, and so was my sister's ward when she was in hospital.
The storm on Christmas day shredded my greens and set my tomatoes back.
This week it is the nasty heat that has knocked everything. Made worse because I ricked my back with the watering can, and so it has been tricky to water more, and to move the sensitive plants into better places. But I have done what I can!
I am looking forward to rain and cooler weather after today!
PS I did mulch!

just cropping the last savoy cabbages, or broccoli or cavoli romani, when I need them, instead of going to the supermarket I drive to my campo and even if I have no knife with me I manage to get fresh greens to be eaten immediately, or to make pasta sauce ![]()
I was so proud of little very very green spinach I took home for my daughter on holiday here for a week ![]()

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?
Still have 8 smallish Savoys that need another few weeks to grow.
The "Purple-sprouting" is now leaves only, but makes a great sustitute for "Spring Greens".
The Carrots, Parsnips, baby-Turnips & Beetroot I clamped last autumn are holding out with no signs of rot.
There is still 1/2 bag of potatoes (we have had little in the way of frost so far this year).
There are still Pears & Apples in the store along with Squashes, dried Beans, dried Tomatoes & lots of herbs............& still a fair number of frozen & preseved berry-fruits.
I have to buy Onions, Leeks, & Fruit & Salads just yet, but soon.........very soon......

No love, I make a "clamp".................a really old-fashioned way of storing root veg in dryish sand to stop them drying out, going soft or rotting.
I use a slightly cut-down wooden packing case, a layer of barely damp sand, then a layer of clean & undamaged roots (not touching the sides or each other), then another layer of sand 2" thick...............fill the box in layers until nearly full.
Cover with paper or sacking, & keep in a frost-free shed or garage.
You may need to check from time to time that there's no rot or vermin damaging the roots..............but kept dry, roots keep like this for several months.
