Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

Given the need for roots to be well away from the pool, I would be tempted to go for a heavy-duty sailcloth canopy & have low-maintenance shrubs to soften & "green" up the poolside. You also have to consider the effects of "heave" on root systems near pools in a good blow.
This way you get the best of both worlds without any of the risks.

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

Thanks for that minerva.
I was thinking along the same lines.
There's lots of long bamboo growing wild out here so we may well go and pull some up (from a cousin's ground) and make some dappled shade with that.

As long as the Bamboo you plant isn't too invasive, you should be able put a few shrubs in to add a bit of seasonal colour too. Green is cooling & restful to the eye, but it does sometimes need a little "relief".

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

I'm hoping to be able to get my onions planted this Sunday.  Surely the weather is going to settle down soon.  Min, from your previous post it sounds like you're about a month ahead of us.  Nothing has dared poke it's head out of the ground yet.  I do have one Hellebore getting ready to bloom, so that's encouraging.

My hellebores are in full bloom (I have several varieties, & all are in flower) at the moment. So yes, I think we are well ahead of you...................though knowing British weather as I do, that could change at any moment, & probably will !

................for prize-winning Champion onions, it's customary to plant them on Christmas Day here.

Re: Gardening ~ What are you up to?

Purchased seeds today. Hoping the weather will warm up, melt all the snow and allow me into the garden in the next 27 days. Finished planning its layout. Disappointed the seed potatoes I wanted were'nt available.  SOON crossed

I'm peeping through the film tunnel to see if salad and radicchietto wave to me crossed

Thinking about the rhubarb that is wilting in the heat...it may even stew it.
