Re: Favorit Picnic Items
I remember egg and bacon pie as my favourite on picnics when we were little.
The one that came into fashion when I had grown up is this:

I am sure it had an Italian name but I can't think of it! I had to google 'loaf filled with eggplant capsicum' to find this.

Picnic loaf must be the new name! ![]()

That looks good and very familiar, too. I have seen this on an Italian cooking show and I don't recall the name either.
Was the egg and bacon pie different than a Quiche Lorraine?

This is the closest recipe I can find to what we had:

My mum made her pastry and chopped her own onions though! ![]()

Re: Favorit Picnic Items
Going to the beach growing up picnics we very simple sandwiches, fresh fruit, chips/crisps, cool jug of lemonaid, or cans of soda. I enjoyed the lunchs my dad, uncles and I would take hunting better. A whole homemade salami, loaf of fresh italian bread, montasio cheese(large wedge) and a sharp knife. Homemade wine for them and some kind of soda for me. My dad often knew where apple or pear trees were growing wild, or wild grapes. Even back then I was more about the food, thqn the hunting. ![]()

egg and bacon pie in Italy could be either "casatiello" or "torta salata"

Bacon and Egg Pie....
Thats a 'blast from the past' !
Bacon and Egg pies that I remember always had a pastry top ... Bacon was scattered into the base of the pastry case and eggs were cracked on top , (not mixed in any way but just as they fell out of their shells ) more bacon , seasoning and a pastry lid on the pie before it being baked .
A lot of bacon was used in the pie.
When the pie was cut there was the layer of bacon , the white of the egg that had gone between the bacom and the round yellow egg yolkes .
I think that some sliced precooked potatoes would also work in this pie.
